I'm not easily impressed but....

I do enjoy gaming on my LG D2342 passive monitor but so far I have found first person shooters very hard to play. This is because in 2d you can aim using the sight and see your target at the same time but in 3D I find it too hard to focus on the what I am aiming at. I quite like super stardust HD on the playstation 3 when in 3D mode. I Have LFD2 so I think I will give that a try tonight.

CTRL SHIFT P.

Turns on a lazer sight ;)

I'm pretty sure that's the command for it, but RTFM, basically. There are a multitude of clever tricks you can do with Tridef. Including switching to virtual 3d if the 3d mode is buggy, increase and decrease 3d depth and so on.

I didn't realise about the lazer sight either, so you're not alone. Problem being is the crosshair stays "on the glass" so to speak and doesn't aim accurately any more. Just use the lazers and you're laughing. Really gives you a nice advantage in left 4 dead, 'cos you just point and fire :D

Thanks for the info Andy.

I've watched 3D films before, is that anything to judge whether or not I will see 3D on the monitor though?

When you sad 3D vision is stronger. Do you mean that it is more noticeable over passive 3D or stronger in a sense that it takes more of a toll on your eyes?

In 3D terms they are dead level. Basically your monitor becomes a box that feels about a foot deep. Models inside it are like little models you collect (toy soldiers for example).

Active shutter 3D (AKA 3dvision) offers a stronger effect on the actual items inside there. It also offers more "popout" but only on games that were designed for 3dvision (the ones Nvidia sort of sponsored if you will).

Crysis, for example pops even on my passive display. Grass comes right out of the screen. I didn't like it though as I found it terribly distracting, but hey, each to his own :)

But to say that one is less impressive than the other IMO isn't fair at all. Passive costs nearly half of Active for a start..

As for the flickering? I personally can not use active. I have very sensitive eyes, especially to flicker. If, for example, I sit in a car and can't see where I am going and the light flickers in? I throw up, fast.

I really can't emphasise enough how it's not a good idea to lay out lots of money on this technology as it does have its drawbacks. Many of them too. It's not a "hard wired" effect, it relies on you to make it work, and you may have problems with it.

Active 3D is more defined and deep for me personally but with 3D you really need to try before you buy like Andy says as others can have different experiences.

For example, my missus got hit by a rounders ball in the eye when she was younger and she feels sick if she watches Active 3D whereas Passive she can cope with (just about). Didn't stop me buying Active 3D set for the living room though LOL....

haha nice to see who wears the trousers :D

Thanks again. It's definitely something I'm going to get, it's as you said though, need to try before I buy.

With passive it's less of a risk. Mostly because it's cheaper.

I'd been using a low rent Hannspree screen for about three years. It didn't need replacing, but when the LG came along at £145 I couldn't resist.

Mum needed a new TV so I simply bought her a HDMI freeview box (HD) for £30 from fleabay and she was away.

So really even if I never use 3D it doesn't matter. I do like the way you can take or leave 3D too. It's not like Surround or Eyefinity and you don't have to put up with a hideous desktop and all the space it takes just to use it.

I didn't play Alan Wake in 3D for example because of the swirling effect. It made me feel quite ill so I just played it normally :)

Also. You need a few hours at least to really let it sink in. At first it's odd because you're not sure what to look for. Now though? as soon as my glasses go on I can see it as I know what to look out for :)

Yeah - I know a lot of people bought the BenQ 120hz monitor like me, primarily for 120hz 2D gaming.

3D was just then a really nice added bonus on top but now I've experienced it, I want more and more *nom* *nom*

Hmm yeah that's not a cheap swap out to make. One warning I will give you about the el cheapo LG is that it is quite fussy about viewing angles. So you really do need to be right in front of it.

Also, many of them shipped out with the incorrect glasses so are prone to ghosting. I thought I had the bummy glasses, but 12.4 CAT seems to have stopped it completely.

Zalman make a pair for about a tenner that sort it. I really should order a pair...

Funny really. If I hadn't gone 3D then I'd have probably sold off the PC by now as I was getting bored with games. But 3D just adds so much more to some. I had stopped playing L4D for about six months, but now I'm just addicted again :D

MOAR 3D THINGZ TO LOOKS AT.

Not sure what I'd do with my current 27" syncmaster though, maybe dual monitor for when I'm not playing :D

I have a nice 1920*1200 Syncmaster, which I used before my BenQ, as a second screen now. I don't care that the graphics card doesn't clock down to 300mhz when not in use - it still clocks down to ~700 and idles around 45c which is fine.

The dual monitors can work well for having a film on, Sky go, performance monitoring, chat windows, browsing, IRC etc while still gaming on the main monitor. It is going to slow your performance a little and I mean a little.

Regarding options for 3D panels I think you're always looking (Active 3D) at a choice between the Samsung S23A750D if you have an AMD card (glossy screen) or a BenQ XL2420T if you have a nVidia card (matte screen). Samsung screen comes with glasses as well which is good otherwise you're looking at around £80 for the nVidia 3D Vision Pack 2 on top.

But you can now get the Samsung S23A700D from overclockers for under £250 which is the same as the 750 but with just DVI and HDMI connections and does not have a fancy stand/bezel.

I did think about one of the 700D's but thought i would save some money and go for the passive LG (but i am waiting for them to send me the correct glasses).
