I know modern chips are more efficient and do more per cycle but i cant help wondering what is faster out of these two chips in a laptop im considering:

Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 740QM (1.73 Ghz, 6MB, 4C)

or

Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor (2.53 GHz,3M)

laptop will be mostly used for the usual: email, surfing and watching HD films.

i5 for what you listed, will be cheaper and you won't notice a difference for what you'll be using it on.

Hell, a C2Duo would be fine for what you're doing!

My samsung netbook does all that though i'm not suggesting you get a netbook. But for the use you describe you don't need anything fast and more expensive. The i3 would be more than enough.
