Having just seen this advert, I've been getting reasonably uncontrollable urges to go out and get myself a 205 GTi. Wanted one ever since I had an xs that was amazing fun.

Apparently that one even has A/C. Must be retrofitted, as I thought only the radio one special edition ever had it, and they were all sorrento green AFAIK. Anyway, I wouldn't be getting this particular one because 1) It's a bit pricy (although it does look mint) and 2) It's 466 miles from me !!

However, there is one major problem. I'm moving about 20 miles from work within the next month or so, and I'll be using my car every day, so it needs to not break down every other Tuesday. Does anyone have any recent experience of using a GTi as a daily driver?

EDIT

Wow, in the last 5 minutes that one has been removed from Autotrader! Sombody got a very clean car though by the look of it.

I've never driven a GTi but I am definitely going to get one sometime!

All the peeps over on 205GTiDrivers use theirs as a daily driver and don't come across many problems. I think if you replace most of the electrical things that are most likely to let you down then it should be ok.

Those things are the battery, spark plug leads, fuel pump is known to go too actually, dist. cap, coil, ignition amp.

They'll all easy to replace though. Get your self registered. http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/

:)

Im also tempted to buy a GTi lol,. but im only 18 so it will be killer insurance :(

I currently drive a 205 1769cc GRTD Which is turbo diesel but is 5 door :(

Peugeot made a 205 STDT or so ive been told, which is a three door turbo diesel with the styling of a GTi i quite fancy one of those tbh :p

Yup my neighbour's been using theirs as a daily driver for about 14 years now. Had a cracked windscreen for the past 6.....retrofitted with PAS, which is a nice touch.

Never given any major grief, just needed a clutch and a driveshaft. Other than that, its a goer (bit of a shed though :D )

Taken - If insurance on a GTi is too much, I can highly recommend an XS, if you can find one in good condition. Problem is a lot of them have been crashed by young drivers who can't afford the insurance on a GTi. They have a revvy little 1.4, and have a respectable 90 bhp which goes a long way in such a light car. Same funky handling characteristics as a GTi too :) Got to be better than a diesel. I'm driving a 306 Dturbo at present, and I'm a bit bored of it really.

EDIT

hmmm, I just did a search for 205 XS's on autotrader, and it found 2 within pretty much the whole country, one of which seems to have gotten into the hands of a chav with some taste issues. Didn't realise they were THAT rare!

Yeah, the XS are even harder to come by. The GTi's are a lot easier to get your hands on.

It's actually 85bhp and not 90. :p I think they weigh about 850kgs so that would work out to 100bhp/tonne?

His 205 DT is probably more or less as quick as the 1.4 to be fair though.

My first car a few years ago was a 205XS which I found for the bargain price of £250, it served me well for two years and was great fun. Only thing that ever really went wrong with it was the clutch went. Defintley worthwhile if you can find one for a good price.

The DT might be about as fast as the XS in a straight line, but I cant help thinking it must affect the handling a little having a heavy derv in the front of what is otherwise a very light car.

That's true but i'd imagine it would be better for everyday driving with it having more torque, overtaking, motorway driving and such like.

I love my 205 TD Its got 78 BHP according to parkers.

Put a K&N On it to let it get a bit more air, its a great car for me, ive had it since i was 17 excellent for overtaking and i adore the turbo it it..

Not too slow either tbh, or atleast thats what i think :p

EDIT : It also doesnt handle too bad for a diesel, the person who had it before me put on some Peugeot alloys, and some wider tyres
