I've recieved the replacement parts for the motherboard and keyboard that I sent back.

I have just put them together and I cant for the love or money get the motherboard to post... and I still cant get the stupid mouse to re-charge in the cradle.

I know the CPU was working fine, as was the graphics card when I took it apart less than a week ago, so why is it not working now? Please dont tell me is another problem with the motherboard cos I'm gonna go nuts!!

Anyone got any usefull thoughts or things I could try to get this PC working?

Go back to the start, try the mobo with just the cpu and graphics plugged in. No ram, no drives hard or optical. Are all the necessary power leads plugged in ?
Is the cpu fan in the right power pins ?
Does the psu work ?
Is the power switch from case plugged into the correct pins on the mobo ?

Sounds simple but it is the smallest thing that trips us up. Built a pc for the neighbour a few weeks back and couldn't get it to boot. Turned out the power switch was in the wrong pins on the mobo, flipping manual. Look closely at the mobo, a lot tell you on the mobo what goes where. Go by this over the manual.

The spec is:

AMD AM2 4600+ CPU - I'm using retail heatsink and fan V=1.3v
Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard
Geil 2Gb PC6400 800Mhz Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel Kit V=1.9
HIS X1900 XT
Raptor 74Gb HD
Pioneer DVD-RW
Liteon CD-RW
Floppy Drive
Coolermaster Stacker Case (810 model)
OC Z PowerStream 520W PSU

I've been over the connections, I've even checked the CPU was seated correctly in the socket before I turned it on. I dont suppose the small pins on the bottom of the board (the ones you plug in your Power LED and reset switch too) would make any difference would they?
All the fans are working, the PSU light is on as is the fans in the PSU. Everything has power, it just doesnt turn on, fans spins fast and then slows down and posts. This isnt doing that

I'm gonna start pulling my hair out soon :(

I dont know what you mean by "get the motherboard to post"

I havent read it all, Im guessing it wont turn on lmao

Make sure you have the ON buttons adptor the right way round on the motherboards connectors for it.

I had mine the wrong way round, I got power, but it wouldnt turn on.

Did them correctly and its all good :D

Steve

I'll put it another way then, its not posting a bios screen, in fact its just sat there with the screen blank and all the fans spinning!!

I'll check the connections again at the base of the board, but I didnt think they mattered which why they went...

If you mean the connectors for the power switch, reset switch hard drive led and power led it does matter which way the go.
First things first can you check the psu in another pc to verify it works ?

I had a similar problem when I built this rig. Took everything out of the case and ran it on the desk without any problems. Put everything back in the case later and it ran fine. The board was probably shorting out on the case somewhere.

You'd have to short the power switch headers to start it up like that though, unless it has a power switch on the board.

If it won't post out on the bench with just the bare bones components then there probably is something wrong with it.

(Be careful what you put the motherboard on if you do choose to run it on the desk, I used the motherboard box + the bag it came in.)

I had a similar problem 4 years ago when building my current pc. In the end it was the mobo shorting on the case body cos I hadn't set the mobo correctly on the mounts (risers?). Also was a cheapo case from that well known but not loved retail park place! :p

Its all going back in the same place on the same risers and using the same screws... I cant understand it and neither can Overclockers :(

They asked me to try a different graphics card (which I have done) so now I have the most awesome PCI graphics card known to man... S3 Savage 4Mb or something.... :p I did test it in the other PC as well and that works fine too...

PSU is working fine also... I've no idea what it is....

Have you tried clearing the CMOS (bios settings)? Usually details how to do it in the motherboard manual.

I've tried the resetting the cmos and I've even taken out the battery. I've even tested it outside the case and with a PCI graphics card to check its not my ATI card that's at fault.

Still nout :(

Cos its still not working after 2 RMA's!!

The motherboard and CPU are going back tomorrow... Hopefully should have it working by the weekend....

Hopefully...

So you have tried running unit outside case? made sure all power connectors are on the board?

As you have not spoken about any error beeps i assume you either have not plugged in the speaker to the motherboard or there are no beeps, Usually if there are no error beeps it is the cpu or motherboard.

Keep us posted.

I dont seem to have a speaker in my Stacker Case for some reason.. I certainly havent heard one go off, as I know that can help with what the heck is wrong with it.

I'm hoping to get it back from this RMA and for it to work, but I dont know whether or not I'll get some more bad luck!!

Never mind :) Its all part of the fun I guess...

Next time make sure you attach the PSU cables required, double check system power connections,(reset, power switch,IDE led,) white cable colour= ground/coloured cable = + pos)

Install 1 X stick of ram, if Installing floppy drive, check floppy cable correct way round in socket, if floppy drive led light is ON all the time after starting pc, floppy cable connected wrong way.

If your monitor comes ON then goes into standby mode, reseat graphics card.

Best of luck............

I've tried all of that and still no luck :( The gent I spoke to at Overclockers seems to think I have another bad board, so its on the RMA as well as the CPU just to be sure..

I will keep you posted with whats happening :)

No mate, its just gone back yet again and as I posted again (just recently) about Overclockers charging me without any emails notifing me, I was a little shocked.. BUT

I've called again and this time, it was the motherboard that was at fault, yet again (4th time I've returned something) so I'm getting a refund on the testing fee and carriage plus the other postage that I've had to pay to send it all back before.

Hopefully this will be the last time I'll need to send anything back and it will all just work :D
