Following on from this thread, I got a trusted buyer who offered £1650 outside of eBay, so no fees. Bonus! Probably could have got more if I let the auction run but too impatient... Ta for all the advice on here ;)
So the money went in, burning a hole in my Paypal account, so naturally I spent £900 of it within half an hour (!), on the following:

- Intel i7 950 3.06GHz
- Corsair HX850W ATX
- ASUS Sabertooth X58
- Corsair Hydro H70
- Corsair Dominator 12GB kit (3x4GB) 1600MHz 9-9-9-24
- Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB SATA III 64MB Cache
- LG GH24NS50 Super Multi DVDRW

Getting delivered Monday - made over a hundred quid saving sourcing from elsewhere, so that's good. I still need to get the GPU, which I reckon will be the GTX 470 SOC as it seems to be a bargain. Monitor I'm thinking the Hanns.G 27.5"...

It's choosing the case that I'm struggling with! I know the H70 is fairly huge - I don't want to get a case then realise I have no room. Anyone got any suggestions at all? I'm not too bothered about the aesthetics as it will be out of sight anyway, I just want something practical for the job and well ventilated/roomy...
Never built a PC before, any tips?! "DON'T DO IT!" would probably be sound advice for me, but too late for that now!

although if I had a budget of £1500
Gaming: get a 480/580 then base the rest of your rig around that

Video processing: CPU + RAM build it around that.

So I take it you do more processing and all that lark, that's why you have an i7 and 12GB of ram?

Hah! That thing is a beast. I'm intimidated just looking at it.
Yah the 12GB / i7 is really ideal as I mainly do a lot of music production and my sample libraries eat whatever ram / core is there...
But then I do like to game also! The 470 you pointed to is the one I was thinking of as everyone seems to be recommending it - I was toying with the idea of the 580 but I'm trying to get the balance right with being productive / gaming... Do you think my system would be powerful enough to do a 470 SLI if I got a second one down the line?

I wish I had a job that required me to have a super good computer :D.

I'm always pushing my gf to do graphic design or something so I can buy her one of those super duper Dell monitors.

That's fair enough then.
470 should be able to max pretty much every game going at the moment, except crysis and Metro.

That card in particular is meant to be very good as well.

Are you going to get another hard drive? I wouldn't use the 2TB drive as your OS drive. I'd get a smaller drive. I have my OS on a WD Caviar Blue 500GB drive. Or perhaps look into SSD, if you think it's worth it.

I really like Antec cases. I have the Antec P182, so I recommend it successor, the Antec P183.

For the monitor, the Hanns G 27.5" you're thinking of may suit your needs perfectly if you want a large screen and high resolution. However, if you're willing it sacrifice size for panel quality, I'd recommend the Dell U2311H.

Please keep in mind that for the GTX470 you'll need a case with very good airflow otherwise you'll see temps getting into the high 80s and mid 90s during gaming.

My GTX470 can play Crysis at 1080p with full AA at a decent framerate. Metro I have never tried, but I doubt I could run that full. I dont think Crysis will be a "threat" for much long on systems.

As for building, try the sticky: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18046396

I haven't had a very detailed look through, as I don't need it, as I've done it myself often enough, but from the brief look, it looks like it covers pretty much everything you need to know. And the most important thing, is, if your unsure on something, stop what your doing, and ask! It's a lot better than risking damaging something :)

That 700D is really lovely. Wish it was cheaper!! Also really like the look of this - BitFenix Survivor - but it seems to be on pre-order and overdue everywhere I look :( . I'm swaying more towards minimal design with the cases - the mental hardcore gaming cases with bells & whistles are a real turn-off for me...
R.C.Anderson - thanks a lot for that link - exactly what I need to be reading over the weekend! Although I will apologise now for the many questions I will definitely be asking during this task!
What really worries me is that I only just realised that I'm not connecting any of this stuff together without CABLES! Doh... One of everything then?!

If you want a minimal case, then you will want this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-008-FD&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=1556
Think I linked that on your other thread. Pity it's on pre-order at the moment :(

This case is a similiar one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-114-AN&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=160

Something close to the 700D style: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-153-LL&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=187

Yes. I WANT THAT! Past few days I've been checking on it to see if it magically changes to instock but no luck.

Aaaaahh!! I managed to find the fractal design refine r3 in titanium grey so that's coming Monday with everything else. The whole graphics thing - people seem to think it may be wise if I can wait til the ati card comes out before making a decision... Does the sabertooth x58 have onboard graphics that I could live with in the meantime to be able to run the computer?? Or do I NEED a gpu card?
