Hi all. I hope this thread is allowed. I'm just trying to gather some opinions on what people like/dislike about Imageshack in terms of features, usability, reliability, etc. Any responses would be greatly appreciated :).

Not thinking of making an image upload site are you....almost like, if you wanted to upload something, you could just...uploadit? :D

I don't use Imageshack enough to know anything about it really, so I can't help out I'm afraid. But one thing I find annoying is how sometimes people manage to post a thumbnail-sized image in a forum thread and clicking on it leads to Imageshack's homepage. I don't get that.

Damn, busted. I miss the old girl :(.

I think the thumbnail issue is caused by the fact that they've actually uploaded a tiny image and, when you use the 'standard' image code (without thumbnail), it automatically adds a link back to Imageshack. What I've typed makes absolutely no sense but I think you'll get the gist of it ;).

To make any kind of dent it's going to need to be infinitely better than Imageshack and of course UploadIt which is over 3 years old now and around 2 years since I sold it.

Technically it'll be a big step forward. It'll be quick, very quick. Load balanced and UK based. I've got ~3000mbit/sec to play with whereas, 3.5 years ago, I was relying on leased US based dedicated servers. Should be fun ;).

It's not really intended to make any money, it's more of an experiment and technical challenge.

Benjo - Batch uploads, already covered. Resizing/thumbnailing/watermarking I've been involved with a lot for a recent commercial project so I can bring some of that knowledge and experience over. There's obviously a tradeoff between image quality/featureset and CPU availability.

Edit: Client side resizing is tricky. It could be done with a Java applet but I've played with that for the aforementioned commercial project and nothing which is currently available on the market is reliable enough. I think the answer is to develop something from scratch, possibly a firefox plugin as you said which will resize the image and 'upload it' :p to the web in one fell swoop.

what I hate about imageshack is the fact that you can't find images that you've uploaded already if you lose the link.

Already covered :).

Thanks for the input everyone, most useful.
