Hey, quick question.

Just sold a phone over ebay, the guy wants the IMEI number, my instinct is to say no but they've already transferred the money so i'm thinking it's probably to check if it's blocked or something. If i give him the number, can he go to paypal and get the transaction reversed, i'm not too clued up with what paypal terms are. Tar eveyone.

It should be on the phone anyway, generally under the battery or somewhere like that.

Failing that he could just enter a code into the phone to get it.

Most likely he needs it to get the network unlock code for use on a different network.

As above. It is on the sticker under the battery.

He is going to put the number into a checker to see if it is blacklisted which happens when they are reported lost or stolen.

ask him why he wants it first.

just send it special delivery and put the tracking details into paypal

try to delay him with your answers

also note down the serial and imei number of phone just in case

He probably wants to check it's not stolen or barred.

Take a record of the IMEI, and it not being banned with you before you send, and let him have it.

Well i've said i'm not going to give that info out.

I've noted down all the info, he's given me the money now so i suppose he cant do anything. Just got to make sure i post it by tracked post.

Either you give the imei or you do a checkmend report.

It's to ensure that it isn't stolen or on claim for insurance.

I always ask for this before buying on ebay (its more important for gumtree and stuff since there isn't a feedback mechanism). Unsurprisingly, scammers run a mile when I ask to do this.

Why? He seems like an honest buyer and you now look like another dodgy seller.

An IMEI number on it's own is of zero use to you and a buyer, it's only useful to the network as it's the only way of linking an account, sim and phone together. As long as you have proof of sending and delivering, you'll be fine.

that's not actually true though. an IMEI number and the phone it's from can be used to replace the barred IMEI on a stolen phone which will then be usable again.

Incorrect. An IMEI is linked to a handset and cannot be changed.

Trust me, I work in the business. ;)
