Importing 2nd hand stuff from America

Im looking at importing a watch from a seller in USA he wants $1250 for it which is a very good price for a 5 month old watch (Breitling superocean chrono).

Would i get hit for the tax on the new price or the price i paid for it. New its £1750 ish, list is over 2k and what rate would i pay.

He should declare the value on the box, and that with the postage cost is what you are taxed on (grr @ them adding the postage cost!). However, if they suspect the value written on the box is too low they will asses the value and tax you on that.
