Ok, bit of a passing thought really and is NOT A CONSOLE Vs PC thread. Please think about this before replying with quick one-liners.

If I kept my PC exactly as it is now (which, in case I change my sig. is E8500 @ 4ghz, GTX 260, 8GIG DDR2) in say, 5 years when the PS3 is still sony's main console (which is sony's plan so we can't know any different just yet) Which would be better at playing new release cross platform games on ? Which would COD10 or GTA7 look/run better on?

suppose my main thoughts on this are:
  • In the past, generally speaking, games on most popular consoles looked around twice as good at end of life than the release day games. SNES. PS2 etc
  • I have a dual core CPU
  • Some current cross platform games already run similar on my 2 platforms

So how will this 5/6 year old PC do in 5 years?

the argument is more along the lines of.

what would stay better in 5 years time if people developed exclusively for your graphics card and cpu , your pc or the ps3.

i know which one will never ever see its potential fufilled , i dont think any pc graphics card ever even sees 75% of its real potential

I am a PC advocate, but in this comparison I would have to say the PS 3 would be a better bet.

If (God forbid) Sony do actually keep it as their main console for 5 more years, it will imply that all games will be designed with its hardware limitations in mind.

The PC format as a whole has always been one of upgrade for the best, and after 5 years, I fear your PC will be left well and truly in the dark.

Your pc spec in five years won't be able to compete graphically with the new consoles out at that time, as in five years time probably you will need a quad core to run games at high settings on the pc ?

Personally, the ps3 is past it's best now, never mind in five years time.

I'll eat my hand if the ps3 is still sony's main console in five years.

tbh in 5 years times the games on the ps3 will have scaled down settings and resolution. At least on your pc you will be able to play at a higher resolution even if its at low settings.

The way devs are going atm in 5 years we will be playing text based adventure games (ported from the consoles of course)

5 years when the PS3 is still sony's main console (which is sony's plan so we can't know any different just yet)

Not it isn't, the PS4 will be out by then. When Sony say the PS3 had a 10 year life cycle they don't mean it'll be the only console they sell for a decade. Look at the PS2 for example, that is still having games (and sometimes even exclusives) produced for it therefore its lifespan is still not over even though the PS3 is in its third (fourth?) year. They plan to do the same with the PS3, keep it alive in the background while pushing the PS4.

Wouldn't the realistic answer be neither.

In 5 years time although the PS3 will still exist, the PS4 will most likely be out and that would be where all the big name releases will be (after all you don't see big name releases on the PS2 these days). Also in 5 years time any big name PC release will probably need a DX12 / Shader Model 5.0 graphics card and possibly more than 2 cores on the CPU to get any kind of decent performance :p

Not really. The main reason SNES games looked better towards the end was due to added coprocessors/increased memory in the cartridges in a lot of games.

In the end it doesnt matter if the games look better on the PS3 in future because your PC will still be more powerful.

Your PC is much more powerful then a PS3....

and in five years time your PC will still be more powerful then a PS3 ;)

This.

Though I also thing PS4 and X720 will be out by then and those will be more powerfuly than that PC.But normal average PC of that time will be more powerful than either of those consoles.

Your CPU is already obsolete as most new games need a Quadcore or higher now so in 5 years it will not even be able to run games at low detail settings. PS3 will still be around but the PC will be a long way ahead as Sony will most likely still be making PS3 games as their main system by optimising the dev kits to get more out of it as they will need at least another few years to break even on the PS3 and as the X360 is still doing slightly better the market to sell PS3's to is not as large as the PS2 userbase as most of those bought a 360 rather than wait for the PS3 or bought a Wii instead!!

If you want your PC to last 5 years get a Quad Core or higher CPU now then you will most likely only need to buy another graphics card or 2 in that 5 years to be able to play games at a reasonable level.

This.

In 5 years time, if Sony are still releasing PS3 games, even the latest will run on the PS3. The latest PC games will not have been designed with your PC hardware in mind, but more modern hardware.

I guess you could do the reverse.

Look at a 5year old PC say amd64/6800ultra/1gb ram and ask how it would perform with games today compared to the ps2. That still meets the minimum spec of mw2 so i'd say your pc would be still be JUST able to play new games in 2013. I think game development is slowing down anyway in terms of how much they tax hardware.

I own ps3 and half decent PC [email protected] and 4870 and as much as i love gaming on the pc DA:O especially I picked up borderlands for ps3 as I can play split screen with my little boy and its probably best game i have played this year. I enjoy my pc and ps3 and will probably game more on ps3 as i ain't got the cash to upgrade my pc at the moment as I've got a new baby.

WoW and crysis really changed a lot of Dev's perspectives, it's popularity is due to how any comp pretty much can run it.
so as people have said they arent pushing people to upgrade their hardware to play as much anymore.
more about efficiency than using more power, so i think to be honest most games will still run on your computer, though obviously at lower specc.

i believe the xbox360, and Ps3 have just over 2 years left in their life expectancy(was mentioned in a review of the e3 conference), pretty much for the same reasons, trying to make the games more efficient rather than driving for more power.
