Went round to sort out the in-laws Freeview DVR last night as they couldn't get it working 'properly' and came across a minor issue(!)

They were in the Indian electrical store to get a new Freeview DVR after the digifusion one I gave them packed in after many years. Now whilst they were in there they rang me and asked me to remind them what was the important feature that they needed to which I replied "dual tuners" and suggested a Humax would be the one to go for. Now they said this to the sales guy who came over to 'assist' and after checking the labels and information he said the Humax doesn't have the requested features but this one does; so they purchased that one.

Fast forward to last night when I went round and found that its doesn't have twin tuners as they asked for. It has pretty much everything else (DVD recording, upscaling, DivX, JPG etc...) but not what they asked for. So I've told them to pack it back in the box and I'm going with them tonight to take it back and give them a thick ear. However it maybe better to show my displeasure verbally and I just wanted to see if there are any laws/regualtions regarding the mis-selling of goods like this. I am making an assumption that the SoGA will apply as its not fit for the purpose of which is was bought, though any other 'legal guideline' clout will just give me back up in case they decide to play hard ball (even if it is their fault in the first place)

You won't have a problem if it was mis-sold. In terms of giving the sales person a thick ear, whilst about 80% of them don't have a clue what they're talking about, sometimes information given to sales staff is erroneous too so don't get too heavy with the insults :p

Next time just write the model down, and let them hand it over to the assistant on a piece of paper.

Relying on someone to convey a message is where this went belly up.

Just take it back. No need to kick up a fuss. It's not worth it, it's just a faceless retailer who won't learn anything anyway.

Before you get shirty, give the guy the chance to rectify the problem peacefully and nicely.

If he says 'Oh sorry sorry sorry here's the humax and have a free blu-ray disc of your choice for your trouble' you're going to sound like a right numpty if you then lay into them and have you 'pre-planned' rant at them after they've already effectively completely folded!!

:)

Oh I wasn't planning to get shirty with them from the off, just looking for back-up ammunitions if they try and deny it. If anything like this happens I always gear myself up for the worse and then normally nothing happens so my prepared rant goes to waste - better to have it ready just incase ;)

I didn't get much warning that they needed a new one so hadn't done any research into what they had available so it wasn't really conveying a message.

Generally though, there must be a someone who knows they put out false information (not having a go at this sales guy in particular now) but I've been in before to pick up a toaster and seen a sign at the collection part where there was a printed sign saying "Buying a HDTV? get one of these HD cables for your HD picture" (or very similar) and under it were HDMI, composite and SCART; I tried politely to point out to the sales guys that SCART is not HD and that was false information/advertising but he said the sign was right - I wasn't in the mood for arguing at that point as there was nothing in it for me.

We'll see what happens later when I stomp in; box in one hand, keyboard at the ready in the other...... and then they offer me tea and biccys.

There's no need to overthink this. It's just the wrong electrical product. Walk in, ask for a replacement as it's not the right product.

Job done!
