In the case of pile-ups with many cars, how do insurers & police sort out the claims?

Imagine there's been a huge pile-up - 20+ vehicles, say - on a dual carriageway or motorway. How do the insurers sort everything out? How about the police?

A complex and costly job of firms claiming off one another depending on where you are in the accident chain!

Pretty much this.

When I worked at Co op insurance, fault would usually go to the person directly behind until witness statements and evidence came along to prove otherwise.

It just became a **** show of blame as people would obviously say it was the person behind them that caused them to go into someone. A lot of the time insurers just accepted liability for the car directly in front and claimed off the insurance of the car directly behind to make it easier.
