Increasing pressups from 25 to 44 in 2 weeks (in 2 mins)

I'm running outside on a pebbly surface so I assume that will slow me down. Running in a t-shirt and jeans with trainers.

For the first half a mile I'd say I run it very fast indeed. I just seem to get knackered very quickly after that. My posture isn't the best in the world, though I am trying to rectify this now.

1. Change the jeans to shorts. Unless its pelting it with rain or there is a significant wind chill then shorts are the way to go. You will find running in jeans to actually affect your pace as they are restrictive.

2. Slow down. Seriously. Running fast may feel like you are doing well but its no good if you have to stop before you reach the (relatively simple) 1-1.5 mile mark. How far do you go till you need to stop ?? I bet if you run at a pace that's albeit slower than your first section, your overall time will come down as you can run for longer... Plus, IMHO, running slower and longer builds cardio better as your body is in a sustained workout as opposed to quick bursts followed by rest (that type of interval training is useful for other areas)

IMHO, running is a mental sport as well as physical. Your may think your body is tired but just keeping your mind focused can help...

This is a joke, right?

It honestly never occured to me that jeans would make that much difference. Also it's really cold at the moment :p

There is no question that my body is extremely tired :(, but there are some good points made. I'll go for a run now and see what the difference is. I find it hard to pace myself (obviously i'm not going at an all out sprint, but slowing down seems to tire me out at the same rate).

Running in jeans? Really? I would lol so much if I seen someone do that.

Most bizarre thing I have ever heard of.

I assume this is for a Army fitness test? Or something similar?

This thread is madness.

a) You are running in jeans.

b) You need to be able to do 1.5 miles in 10:30 - yet you can't run non-stop for 1.5 miles?

Please let me save you the heartache - you will not achieve your running goal in two weeks.

Well that run went a fair bit better. Had to wear jeans (:p) as it really is cold at the moment and the last thing I want is a chill. I forced myself to run slower and take a small break during the run to stop myself being overwhelmed. This bought my time down to around 12 mins which was a marked improvement.

Situps+pressups haven't increased at all, but by studying my technique it would appear that I'm not breathing at athe right time. Might explain why I am losing power so quickly?

Do you not have jogging bottoms/sweatpants/shellsuit, even a pair of cargo trousers is probably better than a pair of jeans.

If you're forgetting to breathe then yep, that probably is affecting your power. Exhale on the explosive part of the movement and inhale on the negative part - at least that's generally the idea although it can be more difficult to do than it is to say.

As before though is this for an army fitness test or similar as it sounds vaguely familiar?

Its too cold where do you stay?

I live in the North of Scotland, and am just back a run. Its never too cold to run in a pair of shorts, your body will heat up.

If you are wearing jeans, what do you have on your feet?

Can't get my head over the whole jeans joke.

It's achievable if you have a structured plan.

Not sure if you'll get there by just 'winging it'.

Build up your endurance by doing something like 10 press ups every hour. Should find your endurance inproves, also throw in some slow negatives and some plyometrics (push and throw yourself up off the ground, as far as you can, if you can get a clap in there for good measure go for it.)

Edit: Breathe out as you push and in on the way down. Squeeze your chest and keep your shoulders back to fully utilize your chest instead of your shoulders.

I went from 1.5 miles in 14 mins to 11 mins, 20 to 50 press ups in 2 mins and 30 to 60 sit ups in 2 mins. Took me about 4-5 months of regular training and about 2 3/4 stone weight loss to get there (sitting just over 16 stone at 6 foot 1 now). Still very much a work in progress.

Depends very much how fit you are when you start and how much weight / fat you're carrying.

Hi there. Bit of a red faced moment here, I might have calculated the distances slightly wrong :o , might be running further than I thought....

Anyway, i'll upload a few pics of myself if that helps :p

You don't need to be stacked for the army fitness tests.

You should easily get to the required press ups, sit ups. It's the running that is harder.

I can't believe you run in jeans. :( :)

Have you calculated the run as in.. too long or too short? You got selection coming up or something?

Even so, some bulk would help haha.

I think I calculated the distance (I'm running round a block of houses) wrong and I think I've been running 1.8 odd miles :)

Pressups and situps are still no gain at all. Is there a particular muscle which is letting me down?

You are doing them wrong then.

Go to your local Karate club and ask them to show you how to do the exercises correctly, should take one lesson. They should teach you proper stretches at the same time.

my next door neighbours son had an army fitness test a few years ago....i was in the garage gym doing a bit of training when he knocked on the door wanting to speak to me about something. He had been training at the 1.5 mile for a few weeks...having done very litttle exercise in his life before. I tried to expain to him how to train to accoplish the requirements..and he stuck in over the next 2-3 weeks and passed his tests. So it can be done...its not imposible. 1st thing..get rid of the jeans...LMAO :D

A few days later I though id have a go at this test and set a higher target, do the 1.5 miles , 50 pressups and 50 situps all inside 10 1/2mins. Was actually quite easy...did it in just under 10. needless to say he was a bit cheesed off..hehe.

You have to jog warm up for 800m before you do your 1.5miler anyway.

It takes me about a mile for me to hit my stride and feel my breathing is right anyway, sometimes if i just go from sitting to running 1.5mile my time is worse than actually being out on a run then doing it.

My fastest 1.5mile time was after running 2.5mile... Not sure if this is weird or just correct as im all warmed up :)
