I can't recover anything from the drive as it is mechanically broken, it will not boot, and even if I plug it into my PC as a secondary drive it stops my PC from booting.

I didn't back up anything (cos I'm an idiot) but I can source most of it from elsewhere, it simply means a lot of messing about.

I bought the 7200rpm version not the 5400rpm (my fault, wrong link!)

Monday is quite a common day to get paid where I work, as we are paid on the first working day of the month. So if the 1st is a Saturday or Sunday then we would be paid on the Monday, assuming it's not a bank holiday. Last month we got paid on Monday 4th because the 1st of the month (Friday) was a bank holiday.
