Initial review of my E350CDI

I have not bought any tyres yet but the rears (265/35/18’s) are about £230 a time.

This is the same size as mine - you can get Eagle F1 Assymetric 2's at about £190 fitted, or if you want to stick to Merc OEM spec the Contisport Contact 3 MO is similiarly priced :)

£190 sounds more reasonable. What I would like are Contisport 5's but for some reason they are not available yet. Luckily I put away £75 a month to cover tyres and wheel repairs.

Nope, I wrote to Conti over a year ago and they couldnt tell me if they ever would be. Hence I moved to Assymetric 2 when I finished the CS3's off.

Might be Michelins for me if Costco has an offer on them when I need them. Shame about the CS5's as they sound like a good tyre.

I'd take the F1A2 over the Michelins - they seem as good if not more so than the CS5 so are the obvious alternative. Very happy with them.

Had one of these beat me from a standing start upto around 70 or so along a national speed limit dual carriageway. I mean he did pass me fairly slowly but did not fly by. Powerful diesel either way.

It would genuinely help mentioning what car you have. :)
OP looks like a nice place to be and that engine must provide some very decent overtaking potential.

The problem is it does have very good overtaking performance but I can't be bothered to overtake. The older I get the more I find myself sat in the inside and middle lane at 70. I realised years back when I was travelling from Bolton to Aldershot that they difference between driving at 70 and 79 is about 24 minutes over the 240 miles.

The power does come in useful on country A roads when you need to overtake those doing 30 in a 50. But you always need to remember it isn't a small car and you soon realise how narrow some roads are.

The difference between driving at 70 and 140 is about 1hr 45 over the 240 miles...

I doubt even on the German autobahn I would be able to concentrate sufficiently to drive at 140MPH for 1h45min or find 240 miles of clear autobahn with no speed restrictions to keep up that speed.

The state of UK motorways and the quality of the average English driver doesn't really allow you to drive much more than 80 safely these days. The amount of times I accelerate to 80 to overtake and find some white Audi A4 2.0TDI S-line attaching itself to my bumper doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence about thats person ability.

I think you are exaggerating to say that it isn't safe to drive more than 80... :p

I'm quite happy to sit at 90MPH on a French Toll road all day (and I do about 2 or 3 times a year) but the driver tend to be a little more predictable and the road surface in a much better condition that in the UK.

In the UK, if you are able to actually drive at 80 (which unless you are on the M40 is rare), the average English drive is a accident waiting to happen. They do not understand the basic rules of the highway code (e.g. not indicating or causing other cars to slow down). Look at the M6 Toll ... because you take a large percentage of drivers out of the equation, you can sit at 85 in the middle lane not having to worry about others while leaving the outside lane to those who really want to interest the Police.

Maybe it's just the North, but it's nothing like that around here.

The M6 north of Brum was the main reason I moved to driving automatics :-) And the 20 miles of 50MPH limit on the M62 west of Leeds. And thinking about it, the M60 should be sponsored by NCP during the rush hour.

You have to love the M40 .... when going south and sat at 70 (I don't speed when the firm is paying for my travel time)... other than the lorries I was the slowest thing on the road.

Funny you should say this, when my boss said I could drive his Porsche Cayenne from Berlin to Hannover last year (Cebit), he said maximum speed is 210km/h due to winter tyres still being fitted.

He found it ammusing I did the entire journey at 210km/h, he did not find so ammusing how much fuel it took driving at a sustained 120-130mph all the way. :D

Though the absolute stunning women who drove on my bumper in a Merc convertible, that absolutely blitzed passed us when I moved over to let her pass was ammusing, she obviously had Summer tyres fitted. ;)

The four lane section of the M40 from the M25 to High Wycombe obviously scares the bejesus out of a lot of people. They chug along in lane 3 with two empty lanes inside them.
