Hi,

Showed in bios and boot up, checked disk managament and it said it was un-initialised, after i initilaised it , shows up in windows.

problem is it says 297gb when its a 320gb drive , am i missing something obvious and i thought hard disks were set to use out the box nowadays ?

cheers.

Hard disk sized, as advertised, are sold with 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte. In the real world sizes are measured in binary bytes. 1024 bytes = 1 kibibyte. Because of this as disk size increases the difference between the advertised capacity and the usable capacity will continue to increase.

In order to use it you'll have to first partition it then format it. Have you done this yet?

Also there is a fair bit of overhead in keeping track of files on the disk, so the NTFS table (can't remember its actual name) containing the file name and the position on disk - plus a lot of other junk - takes up space on the disk and windows just doesn't acknowledge this as usable disk space.

nope just used the initialise option from withing disk management of winxp.

No they aren't formatted for use out of the box otherwise you'd end up with Mac/PC/Linux ready HD's and I think we can all agree that's pointless and likley to add an element of additional cost to the devices all be it small. Especially if you want to partition the drive anyway or set it up in an array...

they never come pre formatted out of the box otherwise you'd end up with Mac/PC/Linux ready HD's and I think we can all agree that's pointless and likley to add an element of additional cost to the devices all be it small.
