Insurance. All a big con?

Just renewed my car insurance, and it all seems a big con to me.

Running a normal quote with Admiral, who are normally cheap.

25, 5 years license, 0 points, 0 accidents, 5k P/A, car parked on drive - only driver on the policy.

5 years NCB - £1026
4 years NCB - £1107
3 years NCB - £1107
2 years NCB - £1139
1 years NCB - £1263
0 years NCB - £1479

Now obviously these quotes are stupidly high.

On the advice/recommendation from -Ad- I phoned up Peter Best insurance.

Giving them all the identical details as above, I can insure my car on a classic, limited milage policy (5k P/A) identically to the above policys for £288 with £100 excess, £0 windscreen excess, 5k miles, UK+EU roadside cover, NO DOC.

What is the fundamental difference between a "normal" quote as given by Admiral, and one given through Peter Best, given that they don't take into account my NCB, so are £1100 cheaper... OK I don't gain NCB, but after paying through the nose for the past 5 years it doesn't seem to make a sod of difference if I have it or not!

Peter Best won't be in the business to lose money, so must be making some profit on these quotes?

Are Admiral just making insane profits, or do those TV adverts have to pay for themselves somehow...

woah now.

you have 5 years ncb and you are being charged a 4 figure sum for insurance?

what are you driving?

Admiral do extract the urine, they gave me a renewal of £2200, but knocked of £50 for a loyalty bonus, but if I go with them with a new quote they want £1600. Car insurance is as crooked as it comes, but unfortunately it's the law.

Could it be a way of Admiral discouraging classic cars being insured with them? Seeing as you specified a classic policy with Peter Best, I'm guessing you drive a classic car of some sort?

in comparison, my renewal this year on my fiesta was £560 with LV

i was being quoted £1k on a WRX STI a few days after my 25th birthday in january.
my most recent quote on a focus ST was £900

looks like it is time to shop around OP

Just got my renewal notice from Admiral, with my first year of NCB and it's seen me around £200 drop without shopping around.

Brokers seem to get the best deals, any of the big firms would put 1 grand on my insurance.

Why there's no easy way to deal with these smaller insurers directly I don't know.

I Suffer From Similar quotes on Admiral with my volvo T5 in my postcode.

5 Years NCB = £926
4 years NCB = £980
3 years NCB = £980
2 years NCB = £1006
1 years NCB = £1112
0 years NCB = £1289

I'm 28, 9 years license, 0 points, 0 accidents

Even with 10 years NCB the policy is still £859 !

Under the new System the Volvo is group 42

I also found classic insurance much cheaper on my 300ZX than a normal policy, but needed a garage but was only paying £440 last year FC 9+ NCB 0 points anyway so wasn't too fussed.

Its a 306 Rallye, hardly a fire breathing beast.

If I add a parent then the quote halves, it was around £540 with a mid range excess.

Admiral insured me on a 306 GTI when I had 3 years ncb for £450 FC.

My point was that for comparable cover why is it so high, when one company can offer it so cheap without my no claims being taken into account.
