Insurance Bods - Burglary

Yeah that's what I thought. So if I owned the house it would be covered?

No not at all. All that part is trying to say is that there was no-one inside the house and then they list all the types of occupancy eg owners, rents, shared etc. It's poorly written and confusing like all legal stuff - most likely for that very reason.

because you need to break a window that isnt locked, but shut. so they have already broken in. thats my thoughts anyway. if they are gonna break a window they might as well smash a big window.

In my case they broke the window then used the key inside to open the window. It is really down to the wording of the policy and you have to check carefully. I never used to now I do.

Wording is this so yeah, sounds like I have no chance: :(

"Theft or attempted theft.

BUT NOT while your home or any part of it is lent, let, sublet or shared, unless there is forcible and violent entry into or exit from it;"

It's a rented house.

To me that says that the Theft/Attempted theft part of the policy is void if you have let/sublet/shared your house unless there is evidence of forced/violent entry/exit. Ie. They will assume it was your housemate/lodger etc unless a door/window has been forced and therefore not cover you.

Although you rent, you are not subletting I assume so this may not be the bit of policy that applies. That said you do share with your other half so they might enforce it on that bit.

That's how I read it.

I was thinking down the line of with rented properties there's a chance a previous tenant will have a key, a shared house will obviously have more comings and goings....

I think that comment is in regards to the "owner", ie if the "owner" has lent, let, sublet or shared, ie you cannot let other people live there then claim on the policy. Owner in this case could also be a leasee which would be covered by the sublet clause.

Eg person A lets then sublets or lends the house to person B, person A cannot make a claim.

I think its to excluded people who are not living there being able to claim as they are not able to look after the items there, unless there is sign of a forced entry which proves theer was a burglary.
