Insurance for a 20 Year Old !

Although if you do the above I used to have the worst possible rating and it didnt make a difference
(NP postcode when you don't live in newport fail.)
I.E most of south east wales :p

I suppose not all insurers do it the same way, but my insurance was terrible in a central Bristol postcode, but is now much better in a Southampton suburb postcode.

I'm surprised that Exeter has a high rating, I assumed you lived in Leeds or Bradford by the quote.....

Add parents & siblings to the policy as named drivers, this supposedly spreads the risk, ultimately though I fear it's your age and the fact that most similar drivers your age will stack it at some point are what is hitting your premium.

Whilst clearly your not a Chav in a Saxo, to the insurer, your merely a Chav in a BMW instead!!

I thought at 20 that I was a reasonably good driver, now at 41, I appreciate, looking back, that I was far from it.......

The insurance for me 330i at 21 was about £1100 IIRC.

Admiral group were the only ones to quote me anything near reasonable.

Tips and tricks:

- Play with the number of people you've got added to your insurance. People with respectable jobs work well too. Don't just add your mum - happen to have an uncle/aunty/grandparent/brother/sister/step sibling/step father/step mother who is a doctor/dentist/teacher/whatever? I guess they may drive the car sometimes right? ;) I've added 3 to mine - first one brought it down loads, second one quite a bit, third one a bit more.
- Don't make the mistake of thinking that garaging it will make it cheaper - often it doesn't.
- Play around with your job title.

I'm 28, 29 in February, 2 years NCB and drive a Mondeo 1.8 LX (base spec) so no, I don't think that's high considering your age/car/experience driving.

OP needs to add people to policy, it's the only way.

You must sit down for 30 odd minutes messing with combos, my father as policy holder pushes premium up to 1.5k, despite him having no accidents in 15 years... some of the risk calculations go against logic.

Best advice I can give. The only alternative is to lie... and that won't get you anywhere good when you have to make a claim so don't do it.

I'd say that is high. Insurance on a Merc CLS 500 (5.0L V8) is only £900 for me (20 years old, 1 year NCB) with parents as named drivers in a B rated postcode.

How can this be right ??? 5.0l FFS for 900 quid.... Its not as if I live in a busy city either, Exeter is pretty dead at the best of times although most of the drivers suck on sheep brain daily by the way they drive !!

Ill have a go at some of the things mentioned ... I do apreciate all the ideas thanks a lot :)

Haha I get same on SL500... oh how tempting it was SL500 vs 350Z, but then the thought of fuel and servicing hit making the choice easy :D

No idea. The average under 25 insurance may be £2,500 - but I've never had high insurance, even when I lived in a D rated postcode. To put it into perspective, however, while I may be able to insure a 5.0L V8 CLS for £900 - a Corsa VXR of the same value, with a 1.6 is the same on insurance for me.

Elephant/Bell/Admiral with 2 older named drivers. I can be insured on pretty much anything bar supercar/super saloon (and an S2000...) for under £1500 at 20. A 330Ci is coming out at £850 if I were 21.

I have 3 female drivers over 45 on my policy (mother, and two aunts).
You can be a little creative with your job title within reason but tread carefully.

You might be able to get the price down slightly but ultimately you should accept you might have to pay through the nose to drive the car you love.

Elephant came out cheapest for me this year (23yo, 6 years NCB). They beat Flux by around £300 on my 182.

I rang Adrian Flux today to get a quote on my Impreza non-turbo. They couldn't even get anything near the price which Elephant have quoted me of £1300. That's with licence held for 2 years and 2 years ncb. :/
