Insurance provider changing policy without consent...

Well, I phoned back in the afternoon following the morning results.

Had a go at someone in India, said what are they going to do... Offered me £17.50 refund. Now that more than covers my call costs, but I think I will continue to pursue this with the FOS until I get a written apology from the company.

They have 8 weeks before I can pursue with the FOS.

Oh dear, I just insured my first car yesterday with Admiral.

I must've done 100+ speculative quotes over the last few weeks with many different cars and 1,2 & 3 named drivers (ended up being cheapest with just 1), Tweaking job title etc.

When you start tweaking job title and mileage and where you park it, they block you from making online quotes. I do our multicar policy in my wife's name because of this. It's an absolute joke some of the things that make a difference and then they wonder why people do speculative quotes. Things that made my quote £280 cheaper this year in total are: parking on the street rather than driveway, doing 9000 miles rather than 8000, regular business use rather than occasional and not having a gps tracker. We all know it's a big game but it's quite sh***y when they don't even let you play.

Similar happened to me a fair few years back when I was insured with Elephant - was doing a quote on for a new policy with my existing insurer to demonstrate to a mate of mine what difference it would make to add various numbers of points and certain conviction codes.

Got a call the next day from them asking to complete a conference call with the DVLA to confirm the state of my license (i.e. clean) as they had reason to believe that I had provided false information for my policy.

Luckily they didn't decide to change my policy without calling me as per the OP... that would have been pretty bad!

Elephant are a part of the Admiral group.

You are not supposed to play. Just tell the truth.

Do you use 8000 or 9000 miles? Do you park on the street or driveway? Do you use it for business regularly or occasionally?

Gaming those is just as bad as occupation, convictions, claims etc. It is lying.

With improving processing power, people who try and game the system will have increasing number of problems as insurers attempt to price on more and more risk factors.

It is not mandatory for the Policyholder to utilise all the mileage limit on a policy.

Do you park on the street or driveway?

Policyholder has options, not obligations.

No it isn't. It's investigating options. Be quiet.

That isn't how insurance companies look at this. This is data to them and they want accurate data. They aren't playing a game with you. They want to accurately identify you and charge the appropriate premium. Increasing computing power will mean that it is easier to identify people who do this and price them out or penalise them in other ways.

I don't give a toss what they want, it's completely unenforceable without a legal obligation to fit a black box.

As stated above Admiral are on very shaky ground with this. When it kicks off they will get taken to the cleaners for data protection breaches.

I'd love to see my insurer try and invalidate my policy for driving less miles then I'm entitled to.

They were cheaper by like £20... thing is I may be selling at the end of next month due to a move. But obviously don't want it uninsured.

They said if I phoned tomorrow, they could cancel policy, refund half the month and no admin charge... I however would like to win as it's not my screw up, so may threaten ombudsman etc.

Had to speak to India tonight, so may call sales (UK based) and work from there tomorrow.

let me guess you're a male under 28, and the otehr insurance that's £20 more expensvie is either elephant, bell or diamond?

Well I have bad news for you my friend, elephant, bell and diamond are owned by admiral group.

I beleive that car insurace have a non-compete cartel going on. I beleive big car insrers have got together and formed a sort of cartel where they will only compete for bids for certain demographics only. Admiral group going for under 28 males. The other insurers in the cartel aren't going to vy for yuor custom and will give stupidly expensive quotes making admiral groups quotes the only viable choice.

In your case you can't jkudt drop admiral and go for bell, diamond or elephant, they share records and they'll give you the same issues.

What if I do two quotes, the one where I say I park on the road is cheaper so I start parking on the road instead of my driveway? Have I still "lied" to the insurance company?

Same with milage, 9000 miles being cheaper than 8000. Well maybe I'll just use the car a few more times instead of the bike and bump it up over the year to save the money.

Say I change my job description from Computer Analyst to Computer Programmer to get a lower quote. I do both and have some say over my official job title with the company, still lying?

It isn't a data protection breach.

It could potentially be, lets say you split up with a girlfriend or the next door neighboutr is peeing you off with loud music, want revenge?

Easy, go on a price comparison site, do a quote in their name but put down that they have been banned for drink driving & causing death by dangerous driving. Smile as they either get charged shedloads to their card not long after or better yet have their policy invalidated which then gets them picked up on an ANPR and they actually do get points on their licence for driving with no insurance get a nice fine & have their car impounded, awesome!

The point is they don't know who has entered the data so anyone who knows enough about you can easily get your policy amended.

So?

I might quote for 5000 miles and 10000 miles and depending on the difference will decide whether to use the pool cars at work more often or less often.

I might have a driveway available but decide to leave it on the street and let someone else in the house use the driveway, or I might not.

There is nothing wrong with doing various quotes and exploring different options.
