Does anyone insure their kit? I'm thinking insurance from loss/breakages rather than liability. Photo Guard seem to be quite popular, but has anyone actually had the misfortune to make a claim from them? You can't normally tell if an insurance is worth paying for until you need to make a claim and see whether they try and weasel out of it.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend using house insurance for this - having been in the situation where I've had to claim on my house insurance, I know how they subsequently hike your premium up and nobody else will touch you if you've made a claim in the last few years.

Cover I get with my house hold insurance £8000, accidental damage, vehicle covered and worldwide cover costs £48 a month or £512 a year on photoguard with an excess.

Even if I made a claim this year my premium next year will not go up half of £512 a year that I will pay photoguard. I know this because I ran the figures with the insurance company when I took out my house and contents insurance.

Of course if I was making a living with my gear I'd go with them. :)

When I claimed on mine it went up approx. £600 a year and nobody else would even give me a quote for 2 years, most wouldn't quote for less than 3 years no claims.

For things that there's a reasonable chance you might claim on it's well worth keeping it separate imo - hence the question :)
