Intel Core i7-11700K Review: Blasting Off with Rocket Lake

Tbh, it was Comet Lake that was cr**, at least Rocket Lake is a new microarchitecture. Comet lake was just another Skylake rerelease.

We retested the Core i7-11700K Rocket Lake processor using Intel's latest 0x34 microcode update. Low single digit gains in CPU and GPU performance, with individual tests up to +10%. Some MT regressions, however. Original i7-11700K review has been updated

Rocket Lake Redux: 0x34 Microcode Offers Small Performance Gains on Core i7-11700K

Review is up with the updated micro code, at 1080P its made almost no difference, as you would expect because the GPU is more a factor than the CPU, its a bit better at lower resolutions, still mostly low single digit improvements and no where near good enough if Intel want to reclaim "The Best Gaming CPU" marketing spiel and not be lying through their teeth, the 5800X is still WAY out in front.

The microcode has effectively made no difference, there are minor changes up and down but overall not much has changed and latency is still a problem

10700k owner here, I don't see any reason to upgrade. I only use the PC for gaming and I don't think I'm CPU bound at all at ultra wide resolution.

Can you tell me what cooler your useing on your 10700k please as looking at doing a intel build thanks oh and what sort of temps whilst gameing thanks

I use a Phanteks water block in a custom loop, it usually sites between 50 and 60 in games.

It's interesting to see 3 generations of octa core CPUs @ 5ghz perform virtually the same:

EDIT - tbf though the 10700K has a turboboost of 5.1ghz...

The disappointing Rocket Lake results may be largely related to the small Multi-thread integer performance increase, just '+5.8%'.

There's this too:
'we’re seeing the core-to-core latency (regardless of microcode) still show 28-30 nanosecond latencies on most cores, rather than 18-24 as observed on Comet Lake'.

Mentioned here:

Yeah, not much point if you've already got a decent 8 core CPU. It's 5ghz all core isn't it?

New CPUs probably only 5-10% faster.

Bad time for cpu buying imo.

Best for ryzen was probably 2000 series. Granted they made significant strides since, but the price increases are a bit of a wow.
Intel was probably best in coffeelake era. I got my 9900k cheap but wouldnt have paid normal price for it.
On top of this motherboard price inflation has gone crazy.

10700k is well priced seem em as low as £250 which is a steal. if its for gaming forget bs now amd cpu even out now beats it. or enough to pay a gouged 150 - 200 quid more to notice.
