Hiya people!

My motherboard of 7 years has now failed on me the CPU power socket (4 pin) wont work ive tried testing it bareboned and everything. I cant get a display. Fans spin for a few secs and then stop.

When i take all the stuff out and leave the cpu and put the graphics card in 4* lane the fans spin up but i still get no display.

Anyway i wanna spend about 30-40 quid on a mobo that will survive until december when i will start to build a new system.

I have a E6300 - I didnt get the opportunity to test the CPU to see if maybe that is fried or what.

Anyway, anyone recommend a motherboard???

@BigWayne -

I'll be honest i never like, cleaned this thing out much or ever decided other cooling options and yet i used it day and night lol however over the years ive learned a lot more and i was intending to upgrade by the end of the year and this happened!!!

Might possibly be hardware other than mobo but....I cant test it elsewhere :-(

I have an ECS P965 T....

EDIT - Sorry I should have gone into more detail.

Ive tested the GPU, its fine.
Ive tested 3 PSU's, theyre fine.
I havnt tested the RAM, but theres no POST anyhow.
Ive disconnected everything i dont need.
Ive tested the HDD its fine too lol

The thing is im seriously thinking its the CPU thats failed on me. I know its gonna be a right ******* if it was something else and not the mobo lol

Will they let me test the CPU and possibly send it back (The MOBO) if it was initially the CPU thats failed on me?

Oh and one more thing, looking at all the capacitors, they habe like a cross on them, like a screwdriver.
However, one of the capacitors (the one near the CPU power socket) it looks pointy. The only odd one out....

I've never had a motherboard fail on me in over 15 years . . . I see other people having problems but it didn't happen to me yet? . . . the thing I have had problems with dying is graphics cards? . . . how do you know it isn't the GPU thats died? . . . did you test the GPU in another machine?

Ahh that sounds like the capacitor is gone . . . the top should be flat and not bulging! :(

Well the quick and most affordable option if thats the case is a new Intel® LGA775 mobo

Asus P5G41T-M LX

£37.99 inc

more Intel® LGA775 (G41/G31) Chipsets here

What memory size/speed do you have? . . . and is your Intel® Core™2 Duo E6300 the older 1.86GHz version?

Hiya! Thanks for the quicky replies!

Yes i believe its the old 1.86 Ghz version I have no books or anything so theres no way of telling for sure but it is pretty old and i believe its the old 1.86Ghz......

Anyway i wanna spend about 30-40 quid on a mobo that will survive until december when i will start to build a new system.

so basically your looking at £37.99 + shipping for a new LGA775 board . . . and maybe you should consider clocking that chip up a bit . . . most of those E6300's did 2.8GHz quite easy . . . as long as you have some DDR2-800 and a mobo that allowed overclocking? . . .

You also have the option of not spending anymore money on the LGA775 platform and instead putting your cash towards a AMD® Athlon™ II X3 440 TripleCore & 760G AM2+ mobo that uses DDR2 for the affordable price of £106.98 + shipping!

Guess it depends what your upgrade plans were at xmas and what you intend to do with the LGA775 system when you upgrade . . . food for thought!

THIS MOTHERBOARD

I got it for a play thing while saving for a better set up.

I have never been so impressed by any board I have owned from Foxconn BLACKOPS to Striker Extreme, Im not saying this board is better than those two but price vs performance this board is simply outstanding.

Better than 90% of boards twice its price.

I have had my E6600 up at 3.6Ghz and my E2140 up at 3.2Ghz, I know this board will push further but want to get water on the silicon before I push the volts.

EDIT: E6600 was 3.6Ghz not 3.8 as originally posted.

Sorry for late reply just got my net up and running....

My mate has a quad core 6600 and says its the go stepping one with lower voltage and good for overclocking i was thinking of buying that off him and then upgrading the rest at xmas time or just after xmas.....

Ive also heard that these dual cores i have overclock very well aslong as i have a decent mobo.....

So im sort of confused as to whether i should go for a full mobo for my dual core and clock it hard.....

or get that quad core.....

in the meantime a cheapo mobo could do for the dual core as im using my mates old pc at mo and he wants it back asap

in terma of amd....dont think id wanna go with amd....although my mate just bought the amd blackedition 6 core thing with the crosshair mobo (which is why he gave me the old one to use)

those 6 cores are quite cheap and i believe will go even cheaper in a couple of months time so was thinking of going for them......however i had two amd's and they lasted me for total 8 years and my intel lasted my 7 years without any problems. i didnt even clean it lol!

Apologies for resurrecting this thread. But I just got this motherboard and I was wondering what RAM you used to get your E2140 up to 3.2GHz? ;)

I can't seem to get mine any higher than 2.4GHz. I think it is because the RAM hits 800MHz at that point and wont go any higher.
