**INTEL G3 REVISION SSD's NOW AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER!**

Firstly these intel drives will be quicker than your vertex 2E is real life tests and not benchmarks.

Secondly the 160GB is a good £60 cheaper than the previous 160GB so that is good value for money.

lastly, 600GB for £840 is a very good price per GB with very few manufacturers offering this sort of storage at this price. (oh wait,.. the only manufacturer).

Ok fair enough. Sorry excuse my ignorance but how can something be faster in real life but not in a benchmark? Surely that's something that can only be quantified by running a benchmark.

Im aware OCZ provide their speeds based on ATTO which gives them a numerical edge for some reason or another (forget why), but it just seems strange for intel to release something with write speeds lower than thier last gen.

It's not a pop at OCUK, or the pricing, as agreed its better value for larger capacity. I just dont understand intel's move.

Japan didn't expect an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. Not like they planned on shutting down all the factories making flash chips just to increase prices

Ah hadn't even considered that. Smart thinking. Perhaps in time, once the country gets back up on its feet, we can expect some price drops??

This should be posted on whitewhine.com

Certainly food for thought, but I wish a few more manufacturers would produce SSD's in 3.5 inch format.

I know we have the Vertex 2's from OCZ, but that's about it really, at least at semi-sensible prices! ;)

First of all these drives are faster than the previous G2 models.
Second of all these drives cost less than the slower previous G2 models.

So how does that not make for good value?

Anyone who is expecting SSD's to half in price now or later this year are dreaming, its not going to happen. Drives will just get faster for the same or slightly less money, which is still good value for the performance SSD provides.

Okay compared to Intel G2 drives they might be reasonable value for money, but compared to the Vertex 2E and Crucial C300 I can't see many people being swung towards these.

Andrew claims that the Vertex is slower in real world usage, however I'd like to see some tests/reviews which back this up? Also how does the Crucial C300 compare to these in actual usage?

I was never expecting these to be half the price, however the 80GB drive is the one most mainstream users will go for as 40GB just about fits your operating system + a bit of bloat, 80GB you can actually stick a few games on there. Now the G2 80GB has been around £140-150 for the last year or so, not sure how you can claim the G3 'costs less'?

Great price on the 160GB.

I have the G2 160GB and wouldn't swap the reliability of my Intel drive for something less reliable. Can you really tell a difference in performance between this and the new OCZ drives. For the majority of the time I don't think you could.

I am surprised to see such low (comparatively) write speeds, given the advances made by the sandforce controller chips, these figures don't seem tooo much of an improvement over the G2 drives, and for all that we still have to pay the intel premium ... does anyone have a direct comparison on the G2 to G3 drives ?

(size of 600GB is impressive, but was ALWAYS going to happen, and easier to attain than an increase in read/write performance)

I did run benchmarks on a 2E and C300. Sold the C300.

Looking at these new ones from Intel, I am still getting a Vertex 3..

There must be a reason why Intel have stuck with SATA-II but I can't for the life of me think what it could be.
I missed that, i am very surprised it's not SATAIII

Is that for the small ones? The bigger G3s are writing at over 200MB/s. G2s didn't get that.
Yes, i saw the varying speeds, getting faster as yo ugo up the range... why ? different chips used perhaps ??

As someone said earlier, not a dig at OCUK or pricing, personally i think the prices are about right, given the obvious intel premium they slap on everything, but in weighing up this offering vs the competition, there seems some obvious ommisions in intels offering

Finally - some common sense in this thread :)

phwoaarrr 600gb ssd noice.

SSD prices are finally starting to drop, a bit.

Still £1/gb or near enough for me really, getting there thogh 179.99 isnt bad for 120gb but i still think i would get a ocz vertex 2 bigfoot for 169.99 over this....
