Intel’s X79 Chipset to Support LGA 1366 CPU’s

Very odd announcement and very unlike Intel. What financial interest would it be to bring a new chipset to support older sockets? Why would you upgrade an exiting X58 to a X79TO with no upgrade path to 2011? Maybe there's more to this than meets the eye.. Not sure. Maybe they are looking at AMDs excellant record for keeping their sockets over the years.

Can't see the point, really. If you're going to be spending cash on a new mobo then you'll most likely be doing that as a full upgrade with a new CPU (new socket) and ram etc. Strange. But I guess there are no drawbacks for consumers so it can't hurt.

It's not going to make that much of a difference without the new CPU's, the X58 chipset is a glorified PCI-E hub replace that with X79 on its own and you're only likely to gain more PCI-E lanes and perhaps PCI-E 3.0?
