Im hoping to go traveling around Europe next year after uni, and I would ideally like to be able to access the interweb while im away.

I'm considering installing a PC in to the camper when i get it, but while this bit will be easy, I am uncertain as to how i could connect to the interweb.

A wireless network card could solve the problem when I'm in city areas (can just nick local unsecured wireless transmissions)
but when outside city areas, it would be nice to be able to go online.

Any suggestions on how I could do this fairly cheaply?

Could use your mobile to connect to the internet. This might not be cheap though, and will undoubtedly be sluggish.

Internet cafe tbh.

I think you'll be able to get GPRS out there, but it will be pretty pricey. I'd just rely on WiFi, and supercafes.

I've used my laptop with my mobile phone before via the inrared ports. It's fairly expensive though (if you're not on a tariff), and really quite slow. For some reason though my one only connects at about 4800bps or something silly like that so it could probably be a bit quicker. I've never worked out why mines so slow though.

Not being rude, but your travelling europe and worrying about the inernet?! Think you will be enjoying the whole travelling thing rather than the internet!

Anyway, if you really need to use it, it can be expensive, and the best bet would be to use GPRS through a mobile phone to connect to the internet. You can buy bundled data packs which can make the cost of connectivity go down.

But altenativly just use the internet when avaliable to you (like you said nick someones elses bandwitdh!), otherwise it could start getting pricey :(

agreed, last time I checked with orange, it was very expensive for surfing
how about an spvm600 (or a wireless network card) then go sit in mcdonalds car park and use there wireless network

Most European cities will have Internet Cafes, so unless you are planning on spending time in some of the remote areas that will definately be your best and cheapest option.

That said, when I got married in the Alps in Austria a couple of years ago we found internet access at top of a mountain! (Stubner-Kogel, emailing friends at 2264 meters).

I can definately recommend giving Vienna a visit, and when you cross the Alps go for the Stelvio Pass (if your campers brakes work ok!).

384k. But try using 3g in this country outside of major cities and you'll find yourself back to GPRS 99% of the time. Plus it is flakey at best and not cheap.
I'd do without and enjoy the travelling.

I went through central London with my 3g phone, and it struggled to keep a 32kbps Shoutcast stream running.

I sat in the middle of a campsite and downloaded files @ 35k/sec while 5 other people were browsing the web and chatting on MSN Messenger.

;)

I'd stick a PC in the campervan purely for music/sat-nav, and stick a wireless card in there too, get a hooooge aerial, and hope for the best :)

Check out Digital-Car for some more CarPC information :)
