iPad 2 or HP Slate?

i don't see the point in the iPad full stop, can't see how it's practical in any sense. if i want a phone i have a phone, if i want something larger i have a netbook.
.

It's not a phone, doesn't make calls nor receives texts?

So something larger than a phone is a netbook? That again, doesn't make calls, or receives texts.

You're weird :D

Was in a meeting this morning with 3 millionaires and 2 billionaires (seriously.. made me cringe) and they all whipped out their ipads at once. 5 of them all shiny and nice. made me feel like the poor overworked underpaid bloke I am! I'm the sort of person who takes several months to deliberate over buying a £50 thing or a £60 thing. These guys spend 5 mins deciding whether to spend £50 million on a house they will spend one summer in then forget about and whether or not they can fit their 4 Bugattis in the garage.

made me want an ipad, kind of.

nevertheless, it's your money.

I am typing this on my iPad and I find it highly useful when I do t want to lug my MBP around....

It does everything I want... Also... Not too fussed about the USB port things... The display on the 2nd version will be the same as the MBA I think (as previously mentioned) and the face time camera will be added (maybe a rear camera but I doubt it)...

Am I fussed about an update? No... It does all I need, well worth the money

Don't forget, Faustus says expensive is expensive whatever you earn. They probably deliberated for weeks about this £500 purchase :)

haha

actually i know for a fact that the client got given a box of 10 32-gb 3g models for free as part of this morning's "welcome pack" when they flew in from Swizerland, which included all the gubbins for the job and a huge breakfast from Paul's laid out for them, which I wasn't allowed to enjoy myself... pah.

Money eh?

No point in your life.

It's priceless in mine.

It weights nothing and i carry it around in my bag everywhere i go.

It has 3G built in. It will take you at least 5 mintues from boot up to online with a dongle. I know, i have a Netbook and a dongle

The battery last agessssss, you will have to recharge your Netbook twice before i run of of juice.

It has an ips screen, so it makes showing off my photographs to client much nicer.

The user interface is also soo easy, anyone who ever used an iphone or ipod touch will immediately at home, so passing the iPad to a client to let them look at my photos is no problem.

There are many many things that is more useful than a netbook for me it is not even funny.

One day maybe :o

Is there any rumoured date on the ipad 2? I'm considering getting an ipad this weekend but don't want to if the ipad 2 comes along a month or two later!

Lol for people comparing a netbook to the iPad I didn't start the thread about that. A netbook has a keyboard, the ipad and slate don't.

I am wondering how easily the slate can be used with photoshop for touching up photos or whether the atom will just be too slow.

Yep, it'll be fine for photoshop touch ups, which reminds me...

Interesting fact of the day! - Both the current iPad and HP slate 500 contain the same powerVR SGX 535 gfx core! (Hopefully the iPad 2 will have that monster SGX 540 and a duel core A9..)

+ I read somewhere the main issue for W7 slates is battery life? (2-3 hours heavy use, could be wrong though)

iPad 2 every time!

Totally depends on the size of the photos and what you consider touch ups. 3mb jpeg from your phone camera and a bit of clone stamping, it'l probably do pretty well. 16bit TIFF from a Phase P30 and it might struggle.

If they're snappy enough I bet designers would like them. HP already have Project Catwalk sponsored to the hilt and they seem to get on with their touchscreen PC's for sketches. Only thing is, no-one will use the HP, then Apple will include stylus support in iPad 2 and it'l be the second coming for designers and no-one will know how they ever lived without it etc etc.

If you want Windows 7* on a Slate and all the associated problems that brings then, sure, get a HP Slate.

Otherwise get an iPad.

* Any full desktop based operating system shoe horned onto a slate type device is a bad idea before the Windows fanbois lynch me. :D

Precisely. Every Windows tablet released so far has been rubbish, and I don't see why the Slate should be any different. HP can't get around the fundamental problem, which is that Windows 7 isn't a tablet-friendly OS. It isn't designed to be - it's a desktop OS. It isn't supposed to be finger-friendly.

The iPad certainly has its issues. But a Windows tablet is much less practical than an iPad. The iPad is impractical in some situations; a Windows tablet is impractical all the time. It's hard to control and will have rubbish battery life.

Tablets need an OS that's designed for touch operation and a low-power CPU.

As much as I like Windows 7, Windows 7 & Slate do NOT work.

iPad is the future, either accept it and join us or make do with poor attempts to offer 'everything' the iPad doesn't do yet by failing to do what the iPad can do.

Rarr!

I'm quite curious about the Blackberry tablet, and there should be some decent tablets running Android 3. I don't know if they'll be better than the iPad, but they'll certainly be better than any Windows tablet.
