iPad 2 - The rumours so far...

theres no way they will give up on all the money generated from the higher memory units so the memory card will either be just a reader or not exist.

As well as the obvious profit grab, if it was general purpose storage then it would chip away at the simplicity somewhat to have some things always there in fixed storage and some coming and going via removable.

Interesting point on the momeory there!
the iPad is probobly the lowest profit margin in Apples product line up, so why would they scupper that?
Would it be possible for Apple to alow the SD card to read only say photographs?

Surly they dont want to alloow MP3 tranferrs via the card as this COULD eat into their iTunes sales in grabbing songs?
Same for movies etc.

wonder when the announcement will be of the launch.

Got my cash sat waiting to go and just itching to have one now. Holding off on an ipad 1 purchase this close to the release of ipad 2.

Right now I am holding out for the ipad2 spec before buying a tablet, the HP Touchpad's spec and UI really got me interested.

I fully expect a dual core CPU, RAM bump and at least a front facing camera. Only thing I wish for is that they would pair it with an UI that is more suited for a tablet, Android has realised it and is coming out with Honeycomb and HP/Palm's WebOS for the Touchpad looks like a fantastic and intuitive UI.

I read other forums and get rather annoyed when people raise their pitchfork in rage, claiming it'll be a dealbreaker for them when some say a 2048x1536 display wouldnt be feasible for the ipad 2. Do these people realise how ridiculous it is to have such resolution on a 10" display? Top of the line 24" Monitors dont even have such resolutions.

It's not so ridiculous when you consider that the ipod 4 still has a tighter pixel pitch, it's just unlikely to implemented due to the cost involved.

Plus, I reckon 1920x1440 would be more suitable as it would mean you could play 1080p movies without any upsampling.

That said, unless they plan to make this thing super expensive, a 1280x960 screen would be more cost efficient and still be classed as a HD screen.

Yes the iphone/ipod touch has a tight ppi but they are devices made to be held close to the eye typically around 6 inches away. An ipad which has a screen over 3x bigger isnt designed to held that close and so it need doesn't need such a high ppi display to achieve a similar result, as it becomes harder for the eye to see individual pixels the further away it is. I usually hold my dad's ipad at least 2x the distance I would normally be holding my iphone when it comes to general usage.

A 1080p display would be nice but I dont think that would be introduced until Apple starts enabling 1080p capture on their phones/ipod.

It would be nice to have that res. But It won't happen. The best feasibly will be a 1280x960 to allow for true 720p playback. But ipad 2 will have 1024x768 screen.

I expect the main differences to be:

thinner
lighter
better battery (maybe - ipad battery is damn good) perhaps at the expense of the above 2
camera front and rear
I think SD card slot is unlikely
more memory, or a solution to safari reloading pages all the time
faster processor maybe.
It's possible they may remove the single button, but unlikely.

Head tells me that there's nothing wrong with my current iPad but I just know they'll be something that makes me want to upgrade :o

I'm already excited for it, I'd like to think that I wouldn't upgrade unless it has better performance, but I don't know if that will still be the case when it is released!

My iPod touch 1st gen 8GB £220
iPod touch 3rd gen 32GB £210

I think 4th gen 32GB is £230

So a few years apart.
I guess they stay the same if not cheaper, sometimes more :p can't help you hehe

Do the prices increase much with the newer products or do they tend to stay the same? Just thinking do i get the other half an Ipad now or wait a week?

Certainly don't buy now if you're buying new IMO. The price is very likely to remain the same for the 2nd gen, it's quite unlike Apple to charge (noticeably) more for product updates.

Announcement will be March 2nd, stock permitting I would expect them to be shipping that same week. My cash is waiting :D
