iPhone 4 - buy now or wait for fixes?

The iPhone 4 is a very nice phone, I was amazed at how quick it was over my 3G, which is now dog slow. I'm in the same boat though, I'm still undecided on whether to get one, especially as you can make do with the 3G for the time being.

I think the best bet for now is to wait until the White iPhone 4 is released, as the release date for that seems to have been moved back from where it originally was. I'm sure it will be released before Xmas, but if they have managed to do something of a slight hardware/redesign fix I think we will most likely see it when the White is launched, if they do.

It's a non-issue if you are a person who puts their £500 device in a case.
It could be an issue if you are the person who doesn't.

If I didn't own a 3GS now i'd buy a i4.

There won't be any fixes. Simple as that. iPhone 5 next June is the next iPhone revision.

I laughed when Samsung did their advert for the Galaxy S showing it had full signal strength as a dig at Apple.

I used my Galaxy S loads and numerous times when I picked it up the signal would drop down in EXACTLY the same way I have seen videos on youtube of the iPhone 4 doing. It would have full signal, I would pick it up to make a call and watch the signal slowly drop to nothing then "No service".

I have now sold the Galaxy S and am on a waiting list for an iPhone (new zealand is a technology black hole!). I will be interested to compare them in the places the galaxy S used to fall to zero signal until I put it down then it went back up again!

I'd agree with that - why would they goto the expense of a hardware revision when they're already unable to produce enough to meet demand?

I also can't understand why anyone would have such an expensive piece of kit and not use a case, seems madness.

Hi, I am in the same position i have 4 year old 3G which i would like to replace. I also travel and the only options i have found so far for dual sim and iphone4 are here http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/27/dual-sim-iphone-4-case-gives-your-multiple-personality-disorder/
I've been following the iPhone 4 from afar over the last few months and I've got to say I'm extremely hesitant to pull the trigger on it to replace my aging iPhone 3G.

It seems like there are just so many problems (hang ups, skittish firmware, signal problems) that I'm not sure it's worth upgrading to a device that doesn't manage to fulfill it's primary purpose - phone.

Is there any chance of a new iteration coming out in the near future or are we going to be stuck with this version for another 6 months?

I just don't want to buy a buggy piece of hardware as I travel a lot and don't want to end up somewhere with a semi-working phone.

Also, any chance of a new version using regular sim as well as micro-sim? Micro-sim is kind of lame for anyone who travels a lot and needs to put in local sim cards.

Thanks!

I will be looking at getting an iphone in december, seen as I am free from my contract in a month...

But looking around it seems like it's more expensive than when it first came out?! Am I wrong is saying that? but O2 look like they have got more expensive with it....

Any idea when the white ones will be available ?

This.

They have delayed the white release because i suspect there will be slight hardware revision for signal problems. Coupled with the fact the free case offer ends soon, its pretty obvious the hardware revision is around the corner. Wait and buy the white one. I will be doin so. Plus white is cooler ;)

Wasn't there a rumor that the reason the free case program ends Sept 30th was due to Apple bundling the bumper with the iPhone after the 30th?

Still waiting for the white one myself. I'm still glad I didn't jump and go for the black on release incase they do a sneaky hardware adjustment in the white one.

Have you updated to the newest firmware 4.1??...that should have fixed it....if not then update and your prox issues should go away...if not then take it to an apple store and get it replaced.

Yep, i updated it the moment it came out.

Sadly still does it. Nearest Apple store for me is London, which is a pain really. :(

It's a phone and it's supposed to be designed to be used as one, without the need for a case. If you look after your phone, there is not necessarily any reason why you would need one.

I've had my 3G since launch (2 something years now) and I've not used it in a case. It has a few hairline cracks and scratches on it, which I put down to the plastic used (as I've read about them on other people's phones). I've dropped it once, on a hard floor and it was fine. I'd imagine something like a bumper (Apple's recommended way of fixing the signal issue) wouldn't save it from a large drop either.

I think people can go overboard on protecting their phones with all manner of cases and screen protectors. You may end up getting a scratch on it regardless eventually and it's then when it makes you realize it was all a waste of time. Does it really matter if it's got a small scratch on it?

At the end of the day, none of us know what Apple is going to do, yes they are selling like hotcakes, but I'm sure they are well aware that there are people sat on the fence still, like myself and clearly here we can see there are others too.

So perhaps they will fix it with the White iPhone when it's released, or perhaps not, NOBODY can say for sure. Is it worth waiting to see though... yes, if you already have an iPhone, why rush?

I'd also disagree with ma3ters comment, it's not like where if you need a new laptop, should I wait for a revision, or is there one soon, like a lot of questions on here. This phone was released with an issue, whether you believe it to be or not, which they had to make a very high profile press conference to address, in which they did announce that they would be looking to see if they could fix it. The original phone, the 3G and 3GS were released without issue, so there was no reason you would hold off having bought one straight away.

Hear hear!

Think I'll personally stick with my 3GS.

Bumpers, screen protectors, other protection is a waste of money!

What does make me laugh is £500 for a phone and then a £20 bumper to make it work!

Oh dear god...it works without a bumper...just some people who HAPPEN to live or work in low signal areas get the dreaded no signal...the phone works as it should and with the recent updates the signal issue isnt such a big problem anymore.

So have they fixed the signal issue via a stealth software update?

It must have been a big issue if Apple had to hold a press con to finally admit it and to give free bumpers out. Doesnt sound like "just some people"......

The ones with problems are really minute, got mine a few weeks ago and had none of the apparent reception problems etc. Been working better than I expected.
