iPhone - cant cope with O2 500mb per month

I can believe that most people don't go over the 500 MB/month. I think the selection of users on this forum are probably more likely to go over the limit than the general iPhone population!

I should try and do some experients to see where my biggest data holes are. Turning off email, only using certain apps etc.

You should download your playlists rather than streaming them, you'll burn through your data allowance in no time other wise.

I think you mean 1gb.

Actually I would imagine people actually spending over 500mb a month on their data allowance is very much in the minority. I think o2 said something like 97% of people don't go anywhere near 500mb a month, which is line with figures I have seen.

Ops yes I mean 1GB lol :p. And nope I don't believe what O2 says about 97% or whatever.

T-mobile might still do 3gb per month, not sure but I remember OFCOM investigating them about it a week back.

I tried changing my number with orange once, they said its the equivalent to cancelling the contract so you have to pay. Cheapest option seems to be to get a bolt on. I think 02 knows 500mb is useless and so uses it as an incentive to make you pay more for a bolt on. On the bright side maybe more wifi hotspots or openzone will pop up over time so 3g wont be needed as much.

They said you have to pay to change your phone number with orange? I changed mine completely free with them and instantly around 2 months back now due to pretty much being stalked by the ex lol.

How on earth do you get through over 500MB in a month? Even when using 3G for hours a day whilst on the train to work, I've never really got close. In fact, I've only used about 1500MB in the two years I've had the phone - and I wouldn't consider myself a light user at all.

You just have to be sensible. Browsing the web and checking your email won't eat up too much of the allowance. Downloading apps and streaming hours of video will. Is it too much to ask to leave the downloading until you get home?

There are limits because people who rape the network downloading games and cat videos ruin it for people who just need to get through their email. 3G networks just aren't mature enough for that level of usage yet.

I don't know but according to 'Usage' on my iPhone 3g it says 4.5gb...does that include wifi browsing/downloading as well? :o

Nope. If it's under 'cellular network data', then it doesn't include any wi-fi use. Impressive that you've got through 4.5GB - what do you generally use 3G for?

God knows. Nothing particulary interesting...and I got this phone about 2.5 years ago now. Just after the 3GS came out I got the 3G. :o

Sent is 338mb, no idea how others are getting on...?

Yes but that's not the point. It's too low for a smart phone like the iPhone.

Thats like saying a contract only has 1000 minutes and its too low. Well, yes for you maybe but not everyone.

I use 100-150mb (on O2 with 3GS) which for me too is used when out and about with Exchange running in the background for email. The rest of the time I sit on wifi at home or at friends house etc.

I don't know how you are hitting over 500mb (and want 1GB) unless sending a lot of photos or watching TV on it or something.

I have Pulse News app on my iPhone, which gathers news sites and RSS feeds etc into one app to read them all at once - it's quite nice. I have 13 feeds in it and everytime I refresh it can be up to 9 MB. If I read this on the way to and from work and maybe at lunch time that could be 27 MB. Do this each working day and there's 540 MB a month.

Still got facebook, youtube, emails, apps...everything else to go on top.

Maybe using Pulse news isn't the most data efficient way of reading my favourite website!

Bringing this thread backup I've started to use my phone for Internet now and I just browsed forums and news sites for about 1 hour and used 20mb. If I hooked up email, RSS feeds, social networking stuff and started really using it on train commutes, I could easily use a hundred meg a day. That's the monthly 500mb in a week, assuming no streaming at all. 500mb is simply nowhere near enough for a lot of smart phone users. 5gb would be better. The issue is, people will not pay a premium for it. Smart phones are ahead of their time. We do not have the network capacity to get proper usage out of them.

Some of you use a lot of data

I've used 906MB since 24th June 2010, and I tend to check Facebook and emails etc when out and about.

Maybe I'm not using enough apps :D

Speak to O2, they should be able to get you onto the new 1GB phone tariffs that came out the other day. For example, I got my minutes lowered from 900 to 600 (still way too many :p) and then got the 1GB allowance and tethering for free (effectively).

I'm also with o2 PAYG (500mb limit) and I have an iphone 4.

The very first month I went over the limit but from then on, I haven't ever hit it. I average around 300mb per month.

Go to your iphone 4 settings > general > usage.. and reset it every month and keep tabs yourself of how much you are using, this helps a lot.

500mb is plenty if all you do is browse, try to keep video streaming and downloading for wifi only. With heavy browsing, light youtube usage and the occasional downloading, 500mb should be enough, like I said I average around 300mb now.

It depends on how you use it, one iPad issue of Evo magazine is 300mb for example. the way round this is to download this at home using wifi, but the people using lots of data will be downloading new content on the move rather than at home
