iphone - check how to get it?

i would like to buy a iphone, but i dont want to get the contract.
And i was just wondering If i could goto the apple store get the phone and unlock it?

Also how easy is it to unlock?

I regulary see it being sold on ebay unlocked

Very easy to unlock, don't pay someone to do it for you. Takes about 5 minutes with the new unlocking apps, which are all available for free. www.hackthatphone.com has all the guides posted up, best resource for iphone unlocking I've found.
