Im buying a new phone in next two days...going to purchase phone ouright..no contract.

So without an arguement...whats the best phone for me...looking to use as phone (obviously) for music, movies on planes etc. occasionally (i work abroad lots), wifi access where available (probably not much through phone tarif thingy), GPS system ocasionally...camera and video. Would like a good camera so I can do away with carrying arround a camera seperately.

Now im not one for fiddling much to get things working...i just want to get some nice apps etc and use for the above, which is probably why my thinking of Iphone is best for me. I seem to read a lot of tinkering is required soemtimes for android phones..maybe not though?

Im not really caring too much about the cost..as they all expensive anyway.

Oh ye...and ive never owned a smartphone before ever!

So...Iphone 4, HTC Desire HD or Galaxy S :D or anything else that might be up there worth considering?

for me HTC DHD due to not being locked in to iTunes. 8mp camera, rockplayer is a very solid media player app, biggest screen out of the lot for movie watching, easy to use....

thats my 2 pence worth

rotters

Music: Desire HD, as not locked into iTunes (but can sync with it if you use it as your desktop player), expandable memory and some very capable app players featuring things like equilizers etc.

Movies: Desire HD simply due to the size of its screen (4.3").

Wifi access: Much ado about nothing. Every phone on the market will be equal in that department these days.

GPS system: Desire HD or iPhone (SGS has notorously bad GPS signal out the box). I've only used the Desire HDs which locks on within 10 seconds without fail.

Camera: Desire HD or iPhone. Again, not much between these really. Desire HD is bigger at 8mp but the quality's not much better than a 5mp.

No need to tinker with Android out of the box if you don't want to, but on this subject the Desire HD has a better stock OS than the Galaxy imo (Sense > Samsung). But, remember, the options there if you want to tinker too! You may think you don't want to tinker because you've never been able to before, but believe me once you start, you can't stop!

Oh and if you use ANY of Google's other services (Gmail, Maps, Calendar etc) then the DHD/SGS trump the iPhone for integration.

Hope that helps :).

^ cheers for that. Looking at the reviews...there is two things put me off the DHD...1, battery life (sometimes needs charged in less than 24hrs) and 2, the size of it. How big is is compared with the dimensions of the Iphone 4?

The battery life gets better over time and like all phones it depends on your usage. If your sat on a plane for 3 hours watching a film then sure, you'll have to charge it before bed, but that'll be the same with all smartphones.

The Desire HD is 123x68x11.8 mm and the iPhone 4 is 115.2x58.6x9.3mm, so the iPhone is marginally smaller but of course you have to play that against screen space (4.3" vs 3.5"). The size shouldn't be an issue really - if you can carry and hold the iPhone 4 then you can the DHD, too.

iphone

but you have picked a bad time to buy imo. the new wave of android handsets is right around the corner

best advice would be to go into a shop and try all the handsets ! everyone likes different things eg some people love htc sense and some hate it , some love the look of the iphone and some hate it.

Your best bet is to go try the phones. You firstly need to decide whether you get along better with iOS or Android better, as that'll eliminate one or two phones, depending on what you go for.

I'd put the DHD above the SGS though - wasn't the SGS actually competition for the original Desire? The HD makes that even better really.

One side note, as someone who has used both the Desire and the iPhone, the Apple offering wins easily in terms of battery life, especially with the iP4. I was getting less than a day's usage with my Desire, I get over two on the iP4. The biggest problem for me though was that the Desire took ages to charge back up again, whereas I tend to give my iPhone short bursts to keep the battery topped up. I couldn't do that with the Desire, it still drained away.

Omnia 7. Windows Phone and excellent for all those things you want (pretty much the same for all the phones though).

Go have a play with all 3 OSs and see which one you like the most. All have their little quirks but they are all very good at what they do.

Edit: as for battery life on the Omnia, I get a day or twos usage out of it easily. A days usage with several hours of PDF reading, a bit of web browsing and several hours of music.

1 more phone to add to the confusion: Nokia N8

Music: Plays most formats except flac

Movies: Directly plays most (if not all) 720p videos out of the box including divx, mkvs, dvdrips etc...

Wifi: b/g/n

GPS: fastest signal lock. Ovi maps - free navigation and maps of any country

Camera: 12mpx and 720p recording. Biggest sensor ever put in a mobile phone (1/1.83 inches)

If ur not bothered about having a flashy UI, its pretty good and 'cheap'

The above post made me realise I forgot to add that with the Desire HD/Galaxy S you'll be able to play videos of most/all types straight off the SD card (and access the SD card as you would any kind of USB memory). With the iPhone on the other hand everything will have to be converted through iTunes.

1st smartphone? Don't care about cost? Then...

Just pic your fav, they're all brilliant! (for the next few months anyway :D)

if i was you i would wait. there will be a new iphone in 5 months. and plenty of duel core phones due in the next few weeks and months. all the phones you mentioned are getting on a bit now (desire HD just rehashed desire) yet you will still be paying top dollar for them. i would wait and have a look on engaget to see what is coming very soon!

I got curious and checked wikipedia, which said that Li-ion batteries lose capacity the more they're charged, but it didn't specify if that's per charge cycle (like I thought, so charging from empty to full would help prolong their life), or just proportionate to the time they charge for (in which case charging from empty wouldn't make a difference). Still, the received wisdom has always been to charge from near-empty where possible, and that's what I've always done.

cheers guys..now im more confised then i was before:)

DHD....not impressed with the battery issue really. Would like to get a couple of days normal (calls and standby only) use out of a phone before i needs charged really.

Iphone...why cant it just play divx/xvid files straight out the box without have to convert??? How long does it take to convert a 700mb divx? Also...micro SD might cause problems for me using overseas..as I need to keep full size sim so I can use sim in other phones also.

Have gone off the Samsungs due to reviews...and not sure about the win 7 phones yet.
