So as a part of my time at one of the countries largest IT company’s I got a chance to go to Iraq and do my job for Queen and country.

I was out there for 9 months and it was an experience I'll never forget.

I got an e-mail the other day from a PA of one of the heads of said company’s Defence and Security sector asking me if I wanted to attend a presentation ceremony in June... I'm getting a war medal!!! Wooohooo :D:D:D

well that is a relief - though I do hope you're not getting a shiny gong for sitting several K behind the perimeter fence at the APOD in the former hotel known as Div HQ

I wasn't aware that civies got campaign medals though if IT guys can get them then I'd hope the guys from the likes of control risks group get them too

Well then you'll know what the situation with rockets and convys in disco's is/was then.

As I understand it everyone that goes out there for more than 6 months is entitled to a medal. It's just a nice feeling that what I did out there didn't go unnoticed.

fair enough but I can't say I'm particularly impressed by it tbh... contractors are generally fairly well rewarded and for the most part a lot of them (the non PMC ones) just stay well within the perimeter fence I'm not sure I'm too happy at the thought of some of the ones I encountered getting a gong for their troubles - anyway I guess at least you had the balls to go out there which is more than most people tbh...

Cheers fella, I'm buzzing my choppers off :D

Man I think it's amazing that you were out there doing IT, especially when it was not the no1 plan of the forces, I think you have the stamina and expertise obviously of earning a medal, and good luck to you, my friends who were out there, possibly with you got medals, and some of them for just simply stagging on and off deserved it, I think you deserve a medal more than them for your skills and your stamina too, it's hard to work in Iraq and Afghan too, I'm due to go out sometime soon, so I salute you for your hard work :)

a friend of mine is in the irish guards, he done a 6 month tour of basra. and his opinion was that any person wether military or civilian who worked over there deserves some respect

Quoted for the win. I expect to be doing a tour in a year and I hope this is the attitude of the public, it's hard work whether you're front line or behind and I think any such participation should be given a medal. Well done again to the OP.

I know that's the general consensus, and a bottle of the dew would be nice but even I have to realise that going out there has some consequences, I'm not infantry so I'm not as worried as some, but there is going to be a lot of stress. Especially on my gf/fiancee.
