Is a 24" 1900 x 1200 monitor taller than a 1900 x 1080 or what? How does that work?

I ask as looked at some 24" monitors in the shop and they've hardly got any height except for the Mac one which was much higher but less wide which I would prefer but is too expensive.

Thanks

hiya mate, if you mean 1920x1200 compared to 1920x1080 i can answer that for you. I have a dell 24" 16:10 which is optimal 1920x1200 and have just bought a 24" 16:9 which optimal resolution is 1920x1080. To be honest i didnt expect there to be too much difference but side by side the 1080 seems to have quite a lot less height, in fact it makes my 24" 1920x1200 (dell s2408 ultrasharp) seem pretty huge in comparison, like its a size bigger or something . I would say there is 2.5cm difference in the heigh, the 1080 screen is obviously wider. I personally prefer the Higher 1920x1200 dimension to be honest but that may be because ive owned it a lot longer.

hope this helps

Yep,

also worth considering;
1920*1200 ~= 2.3MPixel versus 1920*1080 ~= 2MPixel

They are therefore more expensive to make, as they use more material (and I've heard theories that 1920*1080 is more convenient for manufacturers generally for having less offcuts and such from the panel manufacturing process - but that is just speculation)

I think the cost difference is more likely due to the fact that 1920x1080 is HDTV standard. The manufacturers can make TV's out of the same panels.

a few more pixels should make the 1900x1200 physically taller but they can change the size of a pixel a little which can shrink or expand the panel size a little.

1200 tall does make for better document viewing and web browsing and its still possible to have one to one pixel mapping for HD conntet if you allow black bars above and below the image.

Taller screens are getting very hard to find lately and osme to the chepest 22 inch monitors are less than 800 tall!

OK. Thanks chaps especially Liamb. Yeah, I saw a dell E248wfp (1900 x 1200) in Tesco and it was definitely taller than the 1080's i d seen. So my new wish list is

24", 1900x1200, matte screen, £200-£250.

Im thinking then the E248wfp. I need the monitor for graphics work for the web. Id like a colour accurate one but thats too expensive at the moment.
Actually, its not important what it looks like on my monitor, its how it looks on my clients' customers' monitors that really matters (the general public or specifically: reasonably well-off 40 to 50 year olds who will generally have bog standard monitors) So average colour reproducion will do for now. I have a cheap Sharp 15" that I always test everything on and that has been great. In my experience it has a very standard colour palette. If it looks good on that it'll look good on anything. What I dont want is a monitor like my 17" AG Neveo F417 which has terribly oversaturated yellows or a viewsonic I once had that had terrible undersaturated reds.

Does anyone have an E248. Ive heard the viewing angles arent too good. Are the colours signifcantly different at the edge compared to the middle when looking straight at it?

Also, any other monitor suggestions I might consider?

I was dubious about going 1080.
I've tried all of the games I often play and all have looked fine.
360 performs very nice on HDMI and the sound passthru from the monitor doesnt seem to have any delay from what I can tell.

Purchased 2 Dell S2409's, these have a matte finish and I much prefer this to my old monitor which was glossy. I never really noticed but the glossy does seem to take away your concentration from the image as well as reflect everything. Only once I had a matte finish monitor did I notice how annoying this had been.
My previous monitor was a hp w2207, did me fantastic for about 2 year.
Only reason Ichanged was a wanted a larger screen.

The only issue I have with the monitors is that the mount is tilt only, I didnt think it would be too much of an issue but as it turns out theyre a few mm too low at the lowest point for where I wanted them. Other than that theyve been great so far ithout any form of calibration.

Also, another fact my mate tried to convince me of was that 1200 or 1080 wouldnt be THAT much of a difference however, the .3m pixels missing would mean it would put less work on the gfx card lol, quite how accurate that is I dont know
