Is 21MPG good in America?

both fair points, got me there.

Also I was just looking at the Honda J37....305hp and 237 lb ft of torque with a powerband probably totally unsuitable for a truck.

Anyway this engine has VCR (cuts to a 3cyl while cruising), VTEC, and is reasonably high compression.....yet still only gets 24mpg on the highway. So yeah...I suppose 21mpg is something to brag about then.

i think the L200 and navara are more Ranger sized.

I drove an 2007 F150 V8 and the fuel economy was teriable, less than 10mpg from memory. I had a V6 Frontier on a pervious trip and it was pretty good (over 20mpg)

oh and as regards to size, I have driven both the F150 (several models) and drove a nissan frontier almost daily for about 2 years and the frontier is a smaller truck in comparison.

F150 (regular cab): 5.3m
Hilux: 5.25m
Navara/Frontier: 5.2m
The old Frontier was shorter, which is probably what you've driven (it was about 4.6m - going up to 5.6m for the extended bed version).

Then again, the Honda Ridgeline fails even more, only gets 19MPG.

and similar power figures could be made more efficiently by using a turbo diesel.....or turbo smaller petrol engine

Heretic!

There's no replacement for displacement!

The F150 is same size as the Hilux ... snip.......

Sorry they are not the same size (give or take 5mm) the F150 is over 6 inches longer than the Hilux, nearly a foot wider, and around 6 inches taller. It weighs very nearly 1000 lbs more, and that is just the standard edition F150, not the extended cab, or extended bed versions.

6 inches is give or take in my book.

Ford seem to think it is :O

Especially at a time like this when everyone is up in arms about fuel prices?[/QUOTE]

Have you seen the size of the cars everyone drives in America? Most of them probably do ~10MPG average :p

And petrol is cheaper over there.

There is an F150 Harley Davidson edition parked round where i live and his neighbour has a Nissan Navara. The F150 is huge in comparison, doesn't seem like just 6 inches, looks like a good two feet difference in length and width, and an extra foot taller.

Edit - The Ford is only a single cab as well, i dont know if the double cab version is any bigger.

Right well we have the F150 in at:

Wheelbase 126.0 in (Reg. Cab, short box)
SuperCab XL & Lariat: 145 in
SuperCab STX/FX4/XLT: 133 in
Crew Cab: 139 in (3,531 mm)
Length Regular Cab: 211.2 in
Ext. cab XL & Lariat: 229.8 in
Ext. cab STX/FX4/XLT: 217.8 in
Crew Cab: 223.8 in (5,685 mm)
Width 78.9 in
Height 73.5-76.1 in

and the Hilux:

Wheelbase 3085 mm (121.5 in)
Length 5255 mm (206.9 in)
Width 1810 mm (71.3 in)
Height 1760 mm (69.3 in)

As you can see, rypt, the hilux is smaller in all measurements. So you are wrong as many have pointed out previously...

In summary, the F150 is a fat car so 21 us mpg is quite good, but i doubt it'll still work after being put in the sea and put ontop of a building marked for demolition!!!

It's smaller in length by 6 inches, which is as I said "nothing".

There is no correlation between the length of a vehicle and it's fuel economy. There are other dimensions apart from length.

Well, I can't find any weight figures for the pickups, nor do I really care about the yankee ones, as they just fail.
