Is 21MPG good in America?

If I ever move to America I would just get a v8 sports car - The MPG does not matter as being used to paying up to £1.15 per litre any car in the US wouldn't really seem that bad.

I would say 21mpg (US gallon) is good for something that huge..........but like in the UK we have 4x4s with 2litre TD engines they will be crap.

Actually, the Navara/Frontier & Hilux/Tacoma are global cars (trucks?), that sell in many places from Japan to Middle East to Europe to USA. They are targeting the whole globe here.
I would not be surprised if the Hilux is the worlds best selling pickup, as you sure see a hell of a lot of them wherever you go in the world.

Ok, you clearly dont understand what I'm getting at. The best selling vehicle in the US, the worlds largest pick-up market, was 800k+. Clipsey the reason I compared it is that vehicle sales in the Pick Up market have dropped proportionately in the US across all brands. If anything MORE people will be buying the japanese brands for better economy. The fact that it still sells a QUARTER of an out going model says that it is not a threat at all.

Europe, another HUGE market, NO pickup is anywhere to be seen in the top 10. And the best selling car is a 207 at ~400k+.

So thats the US and Europe. It might be the best selling Pickup in Europe and Asia, but it damn well better have HUGE sales in Asia to make that up (literally 800k+), and as far as I'm aware they prefer compact pickups instead.

SO, you were saying that's one market, I bet the worldwide sales of the other pickups get no where near the F-150 solely in the US in sales. THATS the point i'm making.

I hope that cleared it up. I think i've hammered it home, well, i hope so. and TRUST ME, Japanese companies' MAJOR focus is the US when it comes to pickups (hell, any car), it's just that they are not segmented off as much as the US companies so can sell them and build them easily worldwide.

edit - i dont mean this to bite anyones heads off, its hard to put across emotion in this kind of context. Have a smiley :)

....snip.....
My point is that atleast 2 of the above are sold world wide (well even L200 is sold in plenty of countries), so just because the F150 is the best selling truck in USA does not make it the best of the lot ... as we only have figures from one market.

....snip....

Considering last year the peugeot 207 was BEST selling vehicle in Europe at around 400,000, and the F-150 sold more than >800,000. It sure does tell a clear story. Only pickups which come close to the Ford are the ones from Dodge and Chevrolet. The Tacoma comes in 5th at 10,000 sales October 08, F-150 43,000 and thats just when the new one is about to come out)

The sixth generation Toyota Hilux achieved worldwide cumulative sales of 1,269,799 vehicles at the end of 2007.

So throughout the entire world, if you add together the total number of sales, over three years, Toyota only manage to sell 400,000, more Hilux's than Ford sold F-150's in the States last year alone.

To me that sounds like Ford are doing far better than Toyota. With sales figures like that no wonder Ford only worry about one market, why go to all the expense of shipping abroad, setting up dealer networks, when you can get figures like that from home sales alone.

Probably because no-one would buy Ford pickups abroad, they do sell Rangers here ... and you hardly ever see them.

Well they're not really designed for anywhere else because of their size. They don't fit in the roads of london very well for example.

You are quite determined to win at this "argument" aren't you?

And you'd only ever need to find them in London if they were there to deliver a trailer, carry tools for construction (like proper hardware ... a plumber for instance does not need an F150 as it's too large for the needs) etc. Vans and small flat bets have no problem getting around London.

That's the difference, in USA people drive them as normal cars (they use the bed to it's full capacity maybe what less than 1% of the time?)

Wrong and wrong :D I really have no idea what you're trying to get at? But clearly you don't know much about this subject a) stating things like above, b) stating things like 'the builders down the road have some trucks and their not Ford F-150's c) I doubt you have ever seen or drove a F-150

I have seen the F150 lightning (and been in it), and it looked like a joke to me, a "sporty" pickup ... please.

I have not seen the more "serious" business F150s, however as I said, the only time you ever need the pickup is if you are going to be hauling enough stuff in the bed that won't fit elsewhere, such as 2x4, large tools, etc.

Are you going to tell me that the MAJORITY of the 500k F150s sold in USA are used for that - or are they bought by Rednecks instead of a car so that they can carry some lumber in the back once a year maybe.

The F-150 series are very decent and have been the most popular pick up truck for something like 25 years I think.

Arguably, The F150 is only sold as the F150 if you take GMC sierra and chevy silverdero sales together it is more and they are basically the same truck.
