Is 3 ddr slower than 2?

Well I have to admit I have never heard of 3 sticks in dual channel, and it still makes no sense how 3 can be dual. But whatever you want to believe I suppose.

*edit* after reading them I do actually understand that now, Learn something new every day

. It wouldn't be doable even with 2x256 and 1x1024 though.

No, it wouldn't, and since the ram speeds drop when 3 sticks are in, it may be best to stay with 1.25GB/2 sticks.

I have to ask (as a newbie to all this) why would they put 3 slots in if it lowers the RAM speed? :confused:

No idea. Perhaps they cut costs on the memory controller or something, so it can't handle 3 sticks at 400MHz. I dunno.

It was a memoery controller problem, only AMD had it. Intels chipsets could do 4 sticks at PC3200.

BTW, you can't have dual channel with 754, it's not possible.

Running two or three sticks of RAM could sometimes be a little dodgy with a 754 setup due to the single channel memory controller

I have a motherboard with 4 slots and they work independantly, meaning I can stick 2x1GB chips in slots 1+3 and they'll go dual channel, and then I can stick a single 512mb stick in and the system still runs in dual channel, according to the BIOS, just probably doesn't give the lone chip dual channel. However if I were to give slot 4 another 512 stick it SHOULD give that dual channel aswell, unfortunately the motherboard is screwed, so slot 4 causes memory errors

Nevermind. The memory in question is PC2700 333Mhz DDR just incase you were wondering.

The PC I'm typing on now uses 3 dimms and runs in Dual Channel. 2x512MB in Channel 0 and 1GB in Channel 1. Lots of motherboards allow this combo.

i doubt you will get dual channel mode to work on s754. you see socket 754 only uses single channel mode, to use dual channel you needed to step up to socket 939.
