Is a GTX 1080ti overkill for a 1080p monitor? I don't think so.

Each to their own, but all I read is that a 1080/ti is a waste of money if you are playing on a 1080p monitor. This feedback comes from reviewers and users, and personally I disagree, even thought I know we are at the stage where we can hit 60fps@4k.
I am one of those rare people who uses vsync in all games because I don't like tearing or variable framerates and I want my GPU to be powerful enough to never drop below my refresh rate.
Gaming with a butter smooth vsync'd 120 or 144fps is awesome. I don't know how I ever managed with just 60fps in the past. Going up in resolution, compromises these high framerates and I don't think I will be going 4k for a while. My next jump will be to 1440p when I can hit no less than 120fps in all games at max detail.
Also, I can add a bit of DSR to give the card a bit of a workout if needed. I think I will be sticking with my 1080p monitor for at least another 12 months before jumping to 1440p.
What do you guys think?

I have a 980ti on a 1080p 144hz monitor and id definitely want the extra grunt from a 1080ti for higher frame rates.

It's a waste for 1080p @ 60hz/fps.

for 144hz or above - it makes sense, but vsync on = input lag especially noticeable for FPS games. *shudders*

I'd be pretty confident in saying a single 1080Ti will do 1440 144hz in nearly every game maxed. Rarely see mine drop below 100 frames at 3440x1440 maxed on bf4/1.
G-sync will definitely help as you won't notice much if at all difference from around 115-144hz.

I see why you've gone 1080p but it's a card that won't have much trouble doing 1440/144hz which looks nicer too.

I am tempted now. I must admit, going from my GTX 1080 to a GTX 1080ti, I do see a huge performance increase. If I can hold at least 100fps on all modern games at 1440p I might just buy a second monitor.

Also, I am sensitive to stutter. You said you won't notice much difference between 115-144hz. How does that difference manifest itself on screen with a G-sync monitor? Secondly, can you disable G-sync on one of these monitors and use regular Vsync if required?
Thanks in advance.

Im confident it will hold 100frames in any game at 1440p. G-sync is far smoother. Basically inbuilt hardware that allows the monitors refresh rate to adjust so no stutter or tearing once you drop frames. Say if your getting 115frames out of your Ti then the screen will be refreshing at 115hz too rather than gpu at 115frames and monitor still at 144hz causing tearing and stuttering.

One g-sync is enabled then you can enable v-sync at the same time to cap fps to the maximum refresh of the monitor.

For me 120-144 is barely noticeable in fps games. Hense why I said your unlikely to notice it if your fps drops down a bit, more so if you have g-sync.

You can set DSR in nvidia panel to 1440p to give you some idea of what to expect.

1080ti is perfect for 1080p if you are not looking to upgrade for the next few years. It might dominated games that are releasing now, but wait 2 years when games are requiring a lot more horse power and you will still be able to game and no need for an upgrade.

1080ti overclocked and running full settings at 1080p in ARK:survival evolved

averages 45-48fps in woodland and will be even less around big structures/bases. Clearly it isn't overkill.

I think I read that game is very un-optimized though, not the norm.

Yeah ARK is pretty horrible in terms of optimisations.

I dunno, plenty of games can kill a 1080Ti, or two in my experience once you crank up the settings at 3440 x 1440 and 1440p. BF4 / 1 are run fairly smooth for most the part compared to some recent games when you crank up the settings.
