Is a hard crash definitely a hardware issue?

My PC hasn't hard crashed for at least two years now, but yesterday it did - complete with screeching noises coming from the speakers. I had to force it off.

I wonder if this is a temperature thing, since the weather is getting pretty hot now.

I was playing and recording a game at the time with FRAPS.

Do you know what temperatures you PC reached, have you got adequate cooling?

It's not always a hardware issue, I've had hard crashes due to a piece of software locking up and my processor just spiralling out of control.

Well I had to reboot of course, but then I fired up some temp utils and both GPU and CPU were hovering around 60 degrees, this being less than a couple minutes after the crash.

Did you update the Nvidia drivers per chance to 320.18? I'm OK now on the latest ones (320.49) but when I was on 320.18 my system had no end of problems with crashes (No BSODs). I actually thought I had an issue with my overclock as Nvidia drivers are usually very good.
