Is Gigabyte poor quality?

Are gigabyte under the same company as foxcon?

Reason I ask is a friend of mine unboxed his new gigabyte board to find a plastic CPU socket cover stamped with 'Foxcon'.
I think foxconn manufacture components for various board vendors, quite a lot of the components on my evga 680i board were marked foxconn, would have been the same for the xfx and bfg versions of this board, as they were all of reference design.

I've not had much luck with Gigabyte stuff either. Except their cases, had a couple of them that were actually pretty good (at the time). Like for like I'll probably avoid gigabyte in the future.
I also had loads of problems with my only EVGA board which sort of put me off them.
Think I've had 2 Asus boards now, up until the time of writing I don't remember any issues with them.
But then, for quite a while I used to buy almost nothing but ABit boards...

The X58A-UD3R suffers from a memory problem. This has apparently been solved in the latest BIOS.

This is correct :)

I had a nightmare with getting all 6GB recognised on my UD3R until the latest BIOS version fixed it.

If the noises are quiet, high pitched whiney noises the it could be the VRM's I believe? try switching off power saving features in the CMOS settings and see if it goes away.

Foxconn make the processor sockets on X58 boards, the cover with it stamped on is the socket 1366 protector that you remove before installing the CPU :)

My UD3R is my second gigabyte board, the first being the GA7VRXP Athlon board, and now the latest BIOS has fixed my RAM troubles I'm happy with it - the K7 board never gave me a hint of a problem

+1 my good sir mines was making those electrical noises i turned of the power saving feature's and viola no noise

Usually it is the RAM that is faulty when you lose 2 or 4gb but it can sometimes be the board aswell.

In regards to what I can only assume to be cap whine, this can be rectified by turning off LLC (99% of the time) as it has something to do with an incompatability with specific parts of the motherboard and PSU.
Also turning off speedstep, c1e and eist have helped in the past.

Try setting the RAM up manually instead of just setting it so some presets, it might work better.

Gigabyte always been great for me. I did have some cold boot issues early on with my UD5, but turns out it was my noob overclocking, and once I found decent settings it has never done it again. Few points:

1. Sounds possibly like a RAM issue - what RAM you using?
2. What sort of noise are you talking about? Can't see any moving parts on that mobo that could even make a noise??
3. Are you going straight in oveclocking? What are your BIOS settings?

The cold boot is a strange 1, cos it only happens if pc been off more then 3-4hrs, and then while its booting windows it BSOD with a memory management error and it will keep looping untill you go into the bios and then out of it.

while doing curtain things on my pc, its like a high pitch sound when doing certain things. Lke in the menu of crysis the high pitch sound starts and and as you go through the menu, the noise changes its pitch, but once you are playing the game the noise stops. I noticed it slightly as windows boots up too.

Im going to fetch the pc back on weds, and hopefully solve these probs 1 way or another. You guys got any advice on how I should go about solving these? I have 2 ideas, 1..... take everything out of the board and reinstall them....... 2 run mem test for a good 24hrs.

The memory is...... Corsair Memory XMS3 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) Triple Channel and Im not overclocking at all.

There is a difference in my mobo and the one Phil has, that is mine is the older rev1.0 and Phil's is rev2.0 (can tell by bios versions, mines F5 and his FB). Just did a quick google and it seems the "whine" is more common on the rev2 board. It seems to be a compatability issue with the board and some PSU's like Corsair (I believe you are using a corsair PSU Phil?). As said earlier, turning off LLC and/or C1E fixes it for most people:) I also found a thread on corsair forums (which I sent you Phil:)) that says people was getting a bsod on cold boot and a RMA of the ram fixed that problem.

Ummm I could try my 600watt enermax thats in my 2nd pc, but dont think ive got a 8pin power on that psu, only a 4. I tried disabling those options in the bios, but it didnt make any diff.
