Is Half life 2 any good?

I have to confess to falling for Alex by the end of of HL2, I miss my Alex fix

By the way, near the end of ep2, the bit where Alex and her dad are on the sofa for a bit of a chat, and they ask you to go somewhere so they can talk in privte, if you hang around long enough they start joking and laughing in German!

Does anyone know what they say?

I played and loved HL1 back in the day but it did get crazily difficult towards the end. I think I ended up cheating to complete it..

I'm another one that hasn't played HL2 - at the time it came out, I was sick of FPS games. Maybe I should give it a go.

Absolutely loved Portal btw! :D Steam updated it a while ago but I've not loaded it up to see if anything's changed?

Half Life 1 did for some odd reason get very tricky towards the end, and it did have a very weird ending. But was an excellent game, and was very immersive. Fantastic story driven action game that you was sorry to see end.

Half Life 2 isn't just another generic FPS though. It has a lot of areas that see the game move away from traditional walk, look, shoot run and gun type of gameplay that FPS are well renowned for. Sure you have to keep moving forward etc, but it does it in a way that means its set well apart from any traditional FPS. You have the standard run and gun scenes for sure, but it adds more to it and there are some areas where it moves completely away from running and gunning. Something that some modern FPS seem to have forgotten. Valve just took the FPS genre and did something amazing, it just has that – well feel you can’t explain in words, you need to play it to understand it.

Try it, I think you can get a demo so maybe try this first..?

I remember seeing Half-Life 2 used to promote Eyefinity or just for general usage and it still looks brilliant.

You've gotta love the attention to detail when you listen to the developers commentary. Unlike Fear which goes on the basis of 'we'll put something scary up in the hope you're looking this way', Valve tried to be damn certain you were looking that way when something occured. And of course theres sneaky things like staircases where they'd make you take the same turn over and over then switch it around and stick a black headcrab there. Or that they made the black headcrab have a very distinct sound so playtesters would panic or stop everything they were doing to figure out where it is.

When I played Half Life 2 during its initial release, it was awesome cause it was essentially a "Sci-fi Die Hard", particularly the jet ski bits :)

Graphics are ugly for me to go back too that.

Sadly, I'd like to leave HL1 as a great memory of what could be achieved with the hardware back in the day. IIRC I had a PII450 with Voodoo2 card at the time.

I suspect that I'd cringe at the graphics were I to look at them now; you always tend to have rose tinted specs remembering these things. ;)

Thanks for this thread, you have me thinking over the wonderful days gone by spent playing half life and half life 2 :)

Man half life is so epic.... buy it, buy both of them, right now

And Opposing Force, Blue Shift.

Personally, i was dissapointed. It is a good game, i just cant describe, i just felt something was missing, or not quite right.

Worth a purchase for a run through though, orange box can be had for hardly anything now-a-days

Blue Shift was horrible, Opposing Force was brilliant though.

I really must play through HL1 again for the millionth time. :o

HL1 > HL2 all day long.

I remember when Valve got Hacked and the HL2 code was leaked.

i recommended this game to polish co-worker when we got chatting and found out we had a mutual interest in pc's and he asked what games were worth playing.

next time i saw him he was telling me how good the game was and spent hours on it and his missus was giving him grief about it. :p

Even with source?
Source doesn't offer anything over the original really. It's pretty much the same. Black Mesa might be a good solution though, if they re-create it lovingly (and it is looking good) and if it ever comes out at all of course.
