He never said that it was poor. Just that it wasn't rich. big difference.
Except it's pratically as rich as the UK. So define rich, by your terms the UK isn't rich and if you think the UK isn't rich then you probably don't want to ever ever go outside of Western Europe.
what's rich got to do with travelling?

The comment was because a lot of Italy still has the hard working small village community and as such use the food they grow and work harder for it.
