Is Hong Kong tourist friendly ?

A lot do in the main parts like Kowloon, Hong Kong Island etc. however a little further out and nobody knows a word in English :p

Not too many will speak fluent english but nearly (if not all) signs have english on them so its pretty damn easy to get by

Being a former British colony, English is spoken widely.

Only to tourist parts, head over to New Territory and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that does. I know, I used to live there. Where my antie live at South of HK island, then it's easy to find an English speaking salesman in the shops. They do it because otherwise they won't be able to communicate with their customers. But the general public may not be so much, althought most youngsters will be able to, the Hong Kong University teaches the all the classes in English (except the obvious one like Chinese or Chinese History). So all Students should have good standard of both spoken and written English.

My dad told me that when I was in Toys r Us, and he was in a bar, 3 chinese men came up to him and said get out of my chair, I sit here, my dad said **** off as most people would, and the one that said get out hit him a few times. Everything was ok though, the other guys pulled him off and they left. Dad was fine just a bruise on his cheek he said.I was 4 at the time and really loved it in Hong Kong.

Yep.

That's what i meant in my earlier post, I was staying Tai Po and nobody spoke English at all.

I went to secondard school there for 6 weeks, it's too far north for any tourist to go and there really is nothing there for them to do that they can't do in HK or Kawloon so the shops won't have assistance who do.

i fly out to hong kong in 6 days for a 2 week break. Well excited. Surely not speaking the language is part of the fun, it certainly was when i went travelling post uni

I go to HK nearly every year. English is well spoken in the city area. If you choose to go some other places, they are really bad at english. Anyhow, it is a nice and easy country to be in. Have fun if you decide to go

My dad lived there for about 5 years in the early 80s and didn't speak any Chinese. One of my friends has just gone over for 6 months for work, and doesn't speak any Chinese.

I have been there loads of times on holidays and you can get by with just English.

My dad has lived there as well as mainland China for about 9 years and still cant speak a word of Mandarin or Cantonese (well he can say a few things but he sounds ridiculous and would probably get laughed at) and he seems to get by.
