is IntelBurnTest really better than prime95?

hi

i just tryed IntelBurnTest for the first time, i set it to maximum , run 20times. while it was testing i was watching the temps, the temps maxed out at 47c but using prime95 on blend setting it max's out at 51c. so surely prime95 stress's the cpu more?

Are you sure the CPU is not throttling back?

The linpack testing that intel burn test is using is supposed to be the most extreme test you can use. It certainly is for my Core 2!

Temperature isn't a direct indication of the stress its under. Ibt has achieved higher temperatures than prime95 for me, but I've only tried it on intel processors.

Neither is better as such. Ibt is generally much quicker at finding instabilities, though it's possible to have a machine which passes either one but not the other. I tend to run both to test stability at a final frequency but ibt alone while increasing frequency.

I tend to use both IBT and P95 (small fft and blend, 8 hrs minimum), for me, IBT tends to generate 5c higher temps but its a nice app to run for a quick stability test, as long as ibt is setup properly, ie in the case of an i7 owner, 16 threads selected manually, maximum ram and let it run, ive used linx in the past but my chip seems to run a bit cooler under it, though tbh prime95 is stil my favourite app as it has to run a bit longer, which represents my use of the system on any given day using various programs from video encoding gaming etc.

Sound advice, you still need to run both :)

Maybe im a bit pedantic about stress testing happy, but it certainly helps, my current 4ghz (21x193) has been tested to hell and back, not a single app has failed apart from games, turned out the fan on my gtx 280 wasnt kicking in properly on auto setting, random freezes, artifacts in game, i was at the point of tearing my hair out. Used msi afterburner and now the card is running as sweet as cherry pie.:)

as i asked above the cpu goes to 100% till it done a run then drops then goes back up to 100% doing the next run, is that normal for IntelBurnTest?

Also it depends which test you're running, I passed linX, IBT then got BSOD on prime95 with small fft took me a fine tweaking to get back to 3.5 stable.

IntelBurnTest passed on maximum 20 runs. prime95 for 3 and a hours on blend it got no errors. i've had no crashs since i had the cpu...

i'll let prime95 run longer at some point... but for now seems very stable...

i'll be glad to get my 4gb ram replacement back. i'm running with 2gb at the moment which is slow :(

I'm not sure if anyone noticed gareth170 is using Intel Burntest with an AMD CPU! :D

I know it works as I use it too but its a different thing from Core2 duo when it comes to temps . . .

Gareth, use all the apps you can, none are better than another, they all have some use!

I can't even get IBT to not fail at stock speeds so i don't bother with it anymore and use the tried and true P95.
