Is it actually possible to buy a 28" 8K monitor or TV yet?

The reason I say 28" specifically, is this would give a DPI / pixel density of over 300, which is apparently the limit of detail that humans can perceive, sitting a short distance from a display.

The displays I've seen for sale so far, are a bit to large, usually 31"/32" or more, resulting in lower pixel density. There doesn't appear to be any laptops with 8K screens yet either.

What would be the point, if games can't run smoothly at 8K resolution? Well, you could turn off GPU / Display scaling and set the resolution to 4K, then play games at a very high pixel density, which would basically get rid of any jagged edges /aliasing and increase image quality.

Or, you could run your desktop at 8K resolution, and run games in a window at a lower resolution.

I used to have a 28" 4K display alongside a 28" 1440p gaming monitor and I'd say above 4K you were quickly running into diminishing returns.

You mean a 14" 4k image on a 28" 8k screen?

Sharp sells a 32 inch 8k monitor but I think it's only 60hz and designed for color grading. There are no home consumer 8k monitors yet, only TVs - but that's fine, as I see it 8k only makes sense on really big screens in really big rooms and the vast majority in the UK have small homes and small screens where 8k is pretty pointless

You want to get a 8k screen then use 1/4 of the screen to display an unscaled 4k image surrounded by thick black bars of the unused screen space.

Sure about that?

Well, until it's possible to run games at 8K resolution, it's an option (or will be when 28" displays become available).

Just wait until 8k becomes a thing, for one it will be a lot cheaper.

It’s a bit like wanting a flying car but knowing you’ll only be able to use it in the ground so driving around in an overpriced car that doesn’t do the job it is supposed to do and doesn’t particularly lend itself well to ground duties either.

Struggling to understand this. You would want to play games on a tiny letterbox in the middle of a small screen, surrounded by black

8k's gonna be... weird - last I heard, Super 35 mm motion picture film scans in at around a max resolution of 6k so it's not like there's gonna be any (classic) movies that properly utilize the format (at that point you're just scanning in more detailed film grain) - sure, there'll be new 8k content made but it looks like physical media will be non-existent so you'll be watching compressed internet streams.

And then games are going to really struggle unless it's all just upscaled/reconstructed - is there really any point? (Other than Samsung wanting to sell 8k panels to everyone...)

I've gotta reiterate the rest here. Regardless of the theoretical limits of "perceptible pixel density" the benefits of high resolution displays is for large screens. 8k will make 70+ inch screens even more beautiful than they already are.

One exception to this will be VR. The proximity of the screens to the eye will necessitate 8k and above screens to eliminate screen door effect and create, eventually, an experience indistinguishable from reality.

But not until we have 120hz 16k effective gpu power to run it.

8k small monitors will appear in time because there will be a small market. But they are pointless

Unless you're planning on opening your own IMAX theatre (12k* horizontal) - I just don't see the point...

*That's actually for capture - I believe top-end projection is 8k.
