Is it normal for a brand new GPU to be open both box and card wrapper?

Ok while we are moaning about packaging, im not too chuffed! My mate purchased all my bits for my new build and OCUK sent my £500 GPU, 16gb memory and HDD in a damn plastic bag. My GPU box had crumpled corners. Not very impressed when I found out I can tell you. Everything seemed to be working but you dont expect to have around £700's worth of stuff sent in a plastic bag. I work sat in front of a big window and I see how the couriers treat out goods... scary!!!

No worries, not sure if you saw the amended post above but order number is OC1490109 . I really dont want anyone to get in trouble for this as all the kit 'seems' to be working fine at the moment but im sure sending stuff out in bags could be dodgy for you as well as us (RMA's/loss of profit).

Well, glad to see OcUK is improving. I still remember my MSI 5850 Twin FrozR Assassin Creed II Edition the graphic card box was sent in a plain DPD bag with NO bubble wrap at all. The box was not sealed and neither was the anti-static bag that the card was in...but I examined the card itself didn't see finger-marks or whatever, so I didn't think much of it...

Can you explain me, please, what bubble wrap for box ? :) Bubble wrap protects what's *directly* behind, so in that case it'd protect box, not a card. Vendors use plain antistatic foil inside well cut-off foam package and in most cases it's enough. Bubble wrap would be needed in case of lack of box, but obviously for new products would be nice to get brand new box as well, not only fatigued one.

The box of the 5850 was sent in a plain thin plasic DPD bag. So you are telling me you don't mind getting a brand new graphic card with graphic card box being dent and damaged? What would happen if the card doesn't work? It would end-up with the retailer and DPD shoving reasponsibility toward each other, and with the consumer getting the short-end of the stick despite additional protection such as simple bubble warp or place the graphic card box in another box with air-bags or even newspaper/waste paper balls can be used.

Last 3 gfx cards all came in the plastic DPD bag, no bubble wrap/air pockets to be seen.

One of the boxes had been dropped somewhere along the line but it was big enough and padded enough inside to take the shock thankfully.

It doesn't help much either when you have to send it back, sourcing a box to put it into, in turn it goes back better protected than when it arrived due to OcUK's returns policy.

I know someone who works with one of the bigger couriers as well(won't name and shame but I imagine they are all the same), and he said it's shocking the way everything gets thrown about at depots.

Took delivery of my brand new HIS 7870 today and i was shocked when i opened the HIS box to find the GPU wedged in a thick sponge/polystyrene type packaging, no anti static bag at all. I've never known GPUs to be shipped like that.

Obviously nothing to do with Overclockers, is that how HIS package all their cards?
 
When I purchased HIS ATi cards years ago I found they never came in anti static packaging, just a clear plastic box, think it was mostly to display it out on the front of the packaging.
 
Well I installed my msi 7950 tf3 and psu that I bought here from ocuk. psu went fine everything running good. Not so good was the gpu. The min I turned on the pc it was glitching like mad, screen flicker so bad I couldn't even see the screen. after that it got worse. black screen...then the colours of the rainbow and froze every single time after that and all the while I was idle. When I tried heaven....forget it! the screen went multicolour and froze.

I don't know about you guys, Maybe you have money to burn, but I saved up for 4 months to get this gpu and psu. I'm so disappointed. I'm RMA this. Hope the next one's better. I'm missing my BF3:(

The GPU you had delivered that was already opened? RMA it is then :)
 
It really annoys me too when I splash out on some new components and I get them and they look like they've already been opened. I don't get OCD about much, but I get it about that. Or if the packaging is damaged. That's annoying too.

Can't say that I've ever bought anything from OCUK like that, but it has happened elsewhere. The sale of 'open box' items doesn't seem to be as prevalent in the UK as in the US. I reckon that for the most part the open box items just get re-sold at full price until someone is happy to keep them.

Does seem like an odd occurance.

Always had perfect packaging from OCUK and been using them for over 10 years. Today I received 2 hard drives, again with perfect packaging and am scanning them for errors now.

Think you just got unlucky.

Agreed. This has to be the worst luck I've had in years. Just want a working GPU really.
