Is it possible to get a £1300 HTPC for gaming too?

Hi guys,

A relative has given me £1200 to build a computer that will double up as a media player and a high flying gaming HTPC.

He has a preference for this case:

So the spec needs to include Windows 7, no monitor he is getting a 30" dell. As beefier graphics card as possible, and a 64GB SSD for the OS and main programmes. NO need for a HDD as he has a 1TB hard drive with all his music, films and games.

No need for i7 please, either i5 route (but not sure of a mATX motherboard in lga1156) or Phenom II. The 4GB of RAM.

Cheers!

We have had to change cases as the Fusion Remote limits us as to what graphics card we go with.

Does anyone know if this case will fit a 5870?

Silverstone Lascala ST-LC16S-MR HTPC Case

or

Silverstone LC10M?

Thanks.

of course you can a high end pc will easily do anything a htpc will do.

Is it just the htpc case he wants, or does it need to be low powered, quite or anything else.

Well he'd ideally like it in a silver HTPC spec so that he can put it in his HiFi/AV stack. He'd like to control it all in one centre control point. He'd also however like to use it as a high flying gaming PC, he would like an i5 and 5870 setup. He's not too bothered about sound, but ideally quiet enough not to bother.

I've done some research, and scrap the last two cases I specced above.

The Silverstone LC17 seems to be the one to go for.

It is able to accommodate a 5870, this picture showing it as the REMOVABLE centre HDD cage which lines up with the PCI expansion slots.

So just wondering what else to put in it, but i5 is his preferred route.

Cheers!

He already has a 1tb hdd and a couple of other external drives which he will use for games, films, music etc but would like a 64GB SSD for Windows 7 and main programs (itunes, firefox etc.).

Yep already got a wireless K+M.

Cheers.

If you have £1200 i think i5 is the better route, something like this:

- Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail - £158.99
- Asus Maximus III Gene Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard - £163.99
- Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C8) - £115.98
- Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5870 "Dirt 2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £336.99
- Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (SSDSA2MH080G2C1) - £197.99
- Sony Optiarc AD-5240S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Silver) - OEM - £18.99
- Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650HXUK) - £99.10

Total inc VAT + Delivery £1,103.78

Ain't over heating a problem in a small case???
Only 2 fans and a beefy G card and a heatsink good enough for the i5?

I would do something along these lines

remember HDfreeview will require a new tuner card but unlikely to see any for a few months.
