SuperPI isn't a game
You're right, but I've found that the SuperPi score is as good an indication as any of overall improvement. That might just mean a smoother desktop experience, or more FPS in games, but SuperPi does seem to fairly accurately reflect the CPU's ability to drive the whole PC's performance.
Obviously if you have a weak component unaffected by anything SuperPi uses (HD or GPU) then your overall experience won't necessarily be better. But in terms of bang for buck, the tiny, quick SuperPi score is a very good benchmark IMO.
It certainly has more relevance to my gaming (mainly CPU intensive flight or driving sims) than 3DMark20whatever. That measures mainly prettiness.
