Is it worth Sli'ing OcUK 8600 GT...

No sorry,

No point at all.

For the cost of two 8600's a single card would be much much faster.

the 128 bit bus of the 8600 is the limiting factor.

lol don't quit, just peek around on here use the search function and you'll find all you need to know. In order to simplify things 8800 GT currently best VFM card and an excellent performer in it's own right. below this budget ( there is nothing above the 8800 GT which can match its power per pound ratio ) then consider a pre owned 8800GTS either the 320mb or the 640mb.

You haven't mentioned the rest of the spec of the host machine or a budget? but I'll break it down for you

Budget £150-175 8800 GT no question
Budget £100-130 8800 GTS 640MB ( 320 MB at very lowest end of that scale circa £100 )
Budget < £100 1950 Pro

of course if you're teaming these up with a celeron 2.2 and 512mb of ram with a 300W no name PSU then forget it, sell the old system and start from scratch.

"with 1024mb as opposed to 512mb. Surely that makes a difference?" not always and not on lower spec cards, the gpu will run out of steam long before the amount or ram it has becomes an issue, google reviews of earlier cards such as a 256mb 6800 series versus the limited 512mb editions that came out or try the 256mb V's 512 on X800 from ATI. I'm running a 7800GT which differs very little in real world performance from a 512MB 7800 GT/GTX.

*edit* rofl £750 for gpu lolz ( hopes nv guys weren't watching and thought I'd suggested I'd pay that for a gpu yoinks ! )

Thank you, that was very useful! A few years ago, I set out to build a pc (which is obviously out of date now) and I thought I knew everything...and now...it's like learning everything again!

It is for a system: (AMD 6400+ BE, 2Gb OCZ PC6400 Ram, WD Raptor, (Some strange make motherboard but with exceptional reviews + cheap).

So, I should wait for the GT. I don't understand why it's out of stock though. So I shall wait :)

Everyone recommending the 8800GT.
Can somebody tell me how anyone is supposed to buy one when no-one has any in stock and have'nt for quite a while now.

Quite frustrating really.

I've seen about £180 as the cheapest on MM for 640 version, would bite their hands off for £130!

if that's correct then I'd offload your 640 sharpish and buy a GT you could have a card with stronger performance, single slot and gain £20-30 in your sky rocket. imho I would not pay more than £130. knowing damn well that if I stretched the budget a further £20-30 I could buy a better gpu, new retail packaged with full warranty, I'm not slating the GTS they are damn good cards but fact is NV have cut the throats of GTS/GTX owners with the 8800GT.

I know what your saying, just cant be arsed with the hassle for about few % more fps. In my cards present clock it does everything I want/need it to do.

I'll be waiting for the NEW GTX next year myself. I bought all my pc stuff expecting to lose money, so not bothered by that.

no worries Dyson, wasn't aiming to make it personal or knocking your opinion if you were in the market for a new card and if you were running a previous gen gpu 6800/x850/78-7900 I'm sure you'd agree that the 8800GT is the sensible finacial choice atm. ( first dibs on your 640GTS when you sell it next year I've got £63.23 in my paypal now :P )

and sli'ing 8600's still very very bad idea OP !

Its yours mate :D

Back on track (Sorry for stealing thread there), no way would I buy 2x 8600's for the price of one 8800GT.

Agree with easy, GT is much faster than the 2900 pro, even the 2900 XT, and i don't understand how ppl cant find GT's available, don't just look at 1x place. :p
