just wondering,

i have a barton xp-m @ 2.6 ghz, 1gb Corsair 2-2-2-5 ram with the 6800Ultra nestling in there.

i am about to build a whole new PC and pass this one down to my son, will he benefit from the 7800GS over the 6800 Ultra ?

i was considering the BFG OC model as the overclocks on these sound obscene.

Not really, 7800gs will be 10% better at most, to get a meaningful difference to the 6800 ultra you would need a 7800gt.
But thens thats a new mobo as well, i'd say keep the 6800ultra.

Seconded. The Ultra is faster in some repects too. Do not bother.

Unless you are planning to seriously overclock the 7800gs then the 6800Ultra will be as good or better at most things. A seriously overclocked 7800gs will however beat a 6800ultra at pretty much everything.

Personally though I think you'd be mad to upgrade. Other than benchmarks you probably won't notice the difference.

NO !! Infact in many instances the 6800 Ultra is quicker than a 7800GS

I've not seen any of these benchmarks where a 6800Ultra is faster than an OC'd 7800GS, can you show me please.

When do you ever see a stock card beating a heavily clocked one?

Look at the OP, stop looking for arguments. He will not benefit at all considering the cash outlay. There is no difference in rendering, only clock speeds and the 6800 ultra is more than capable of handling itself - with both at stock, the 6800ultra beats the GS in many things and they will both clock equally well.

Calm down.
I was asking a valid question as I'd like more information.

Some reviews state the 7800GS is faster than the other AGP cards, some state the 7800GS is slower.

In my personal experience and opinion, the 7800GS is faster, although not fast enough to warrant the extra cost. If somebody is offering you £250 for your Ultra, then do it. But if not, then i'd stay as you are.

I'm not sure if i'd have upgraded if my X800XT hadn't self-destructed.

It's very likely not worth the upgrade, unless you can get a good price by selling the 6800Ultra.

I've seen reviews saying that the card isn't much faster than the 6800Ultra (and sometimes slightly slower)

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/02/13/nvidias_geforce_7800gs_becomes_a_better_buy/page21.html

And I've seen some reviews where it's much faster, around 40-45% faster in some configurations...

Oh and here is a comparison of an OC'd Ultra versus a 7800GS at 440MHz (factory OC'd)

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_e-geforce_7800_gs_co_superclock_review/page8.asp

...that's a 41% increase on X3, a 25% increase on Quake4 and just over a 21% increase on Fear.

They sell for just under £200 on a well known auction site.
Considering you could pick up a 7800GS for about £200 (albeit the slower cards) it's quite bonkers they sell for so much

well.. the 7800GS is the best performing AGP card out atm but its really not worth upgrading to from a 6800 :o
