Is it worth upgrading to 4GB RAM?

Hey,

With the GeIL on 'This Week Only' being at a very nice price I'm considering getting a further 2GB of the DDR2 6400. It is a very nice offer but what I'm wanting to know is how effective will it actually be?

I do a fair bit of gaming, bit of web design/graphics and general internet usage.

Is it worth spending the £135 for a further 2GB of RAM?

Your thoughts please... :)

No. Buy your GF some flowers and thank her profusely for being the smart one in the relationship.

What OS are you on? Unless it's Vista x64 then the answer is no.

Running XP Pro here will be moving to Vista around summer time!

WJA - Already did that on Friday ;) I think I'll put the money aside and forget getting 4GB it seems!

Then do it again. This will have two effects;

1. It will make her happy
2. It will make her suspicious

Both are good in my experience!

Even if he was using Vista x64 then it's still not worth it. As I said in another thread, the average home user cannot utilise 4GB of RAM and if it can't be utilised then it's a waste of money ;)

Yes, Tastyweat has posted plenty of stuff using Vista 64 that proves it never uses more than 2GB even running cache heavy games. And he's got to overcome the 3% performance hit he took by switching from 1T to 2T as well. 4Gb will make sense when you can buy 2 x 2Gb sticks at a decent price.

I know its only been 10 days I think, so it should be in next week at last :) Been checking out a few reviews and they recommend strapping on a 120mm fan to it, shall I order a fan too?

Only get 4GB of RAM on Vista x64. And even then only if you MUST have framerates for "e-cred", or you do a lot of photshop/video/audio editing.

More than 2GB of RAM won't make any difference to your framerates, at best it will reduce stuttering in games when loading data, but not seen anything current that will use over 2GB.

Depends on your application too, Kinda 'geeky' I know, but in the past I used to play Everquest2, and I ran two copies of the game on a single PC, and alt-tabbed between each instance as I ran two chars at the same time.

Each copy of EQ would use around 800mb, so thats 1.6Gig, + some extra for windows, SB's Soundfonts etc etc etc. I think I reached 2.3Gb memory usage once, and it was swapping like hell.

These days however, my gaming habbits are more 'normal', and my system rarely exceeds 1.2Gb active memory, so 2GB is perfect.

Windows XP 32bit can be tricked into allowing 3GB, but it uses PAE addressing, and it is only really supported by applications that understand PAE mode. Basically MS SQL server, and a few others. XP Pro 64bit edition, or Vista 64bit edition are able to handle up to 128Gig of ram at the moment I believe, although most desktop motherboards have a limit between 4gb and 8gb.

I really don't think you'll need it - it's sat in front of 2 80mm Ambers and you're not overclocked so it should be fine. Use good TIM though - AS5 or Ceramique.
